Yes. In the context that this discussion it very much is hypocrisy. Maybe you need to go back and reread the post that started it all.

"Cut ties with family/friends that want a handout". It's not about the ownership, it's about the mentality that people who want unearned money aren't worth interacting with after you've come into a bunch of unearned money yourself. AGAIN, IT'S NOT ABOUT OWNERSHIP. No one said you aren't allowed to say no to people asking you for money.

It would be hypocritical if the gift was obtained by asking for it. The lottery wasn't won by someone asking to win it.

And just from the nature of this discussion... you understand how morally questionable it is for someone to ask for a handout of someone who won the lottery, right? That is also a selfish behaviour, such that we generally frown upon it when that happens. And in some cases, it can be downright predatory.

Choosing to cut ties from potentially predatory people is a quite reasonable response. I wouldn't even call it morally reprehensible, since the very act of asking for a handout in the first place shouldn't be happening to people who win lotteries.

This. Wild that this seems to be such a foreign concept for some

Depend of the amount. If more than 10 millions, I would split in three equal parts

    1 for my personal use
    2 for family and friends
3 for social charities and cultural/historical institutions (I am an historian).

Damn I seem to have started a nice debate.

Lets take a few situations and explain my rationale.

    1) My Mom, who took care of me all my life (both living with her and support on my own) wants to go on a cruise. Done. No questions asked except "How much do you need".

    2) My sister, who has her own family and doesn't communicate much with the rest of the family, wants to go on a cruise. Apprehensive, but I'd pay for it. She was a part of my life. I'd pay for it but warn her that other things might not happen if it keeps up.

    3) Cousin that lives in another state. I've heard their name a few times from other family members, but never had any interaction with them. They come to me asking for a trip. I tell them no because I don't really know them.

    4) Childhood Friend that I've no contact with for literal decades comes out and wants to go on a trip. Again, No. I don't know them now, I barely remember them from when I was 10.
We're all newbs, some are just more newbier than others.

Just a burned out hardcore raider turned casual.
I'm tired. So very tired. Can I just lay my head on your lap and fall asleep?

Lawyer the fuck up and keep it to yourself and hire a financial advisor for investments and future profit / growth. Might as well take a chunk of change from the winnings to turn it into an assured longterm financial gain with interest. No need to live extravagant, move to a nicer house and get nicer things but no reason to live like a rockstar or an actual rich person.

Imagine willingly alienating yourself to show off you have way too much fuck you money and then reap the negative consequences for it. Don’t a lot of large lottery winners end up bankrupt / poor & or harmed because of flaunting their wealth?
