Thread: RAM Question

    RAM Question

I recently had to replace my 9800 GTX+ GFX Card with this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130571 - EVGA 01G-P3-1372-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

In the process of that upgrade, I've decided to also upgrade from my current Windows 32-bit XP to a 64-bit Windows 7, and with that, add more RAM. I currently have 2GBs of this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&SID=u00000220 - OCZ Fatal1ty Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

My question is, can I combine that 2 GBs of RAM with 4 GBs of this (as the first is no longer in stock):

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

Will there be issues with the RAM being from different companies, despite my having verified with Gskill that this RAM should work with my board? It's 70 bucks + a waiting game for the mail, and I obviously want to make sure I have everything set before I hit the Order button.

They use the same timings, so they should work fine together. Worst that might happen is the computer might default back to single channel memory for stability instead of dual channel, my old P4 systems did that when I mix and matched memory sometimes.
    Super casual.

I don't want to waste 2 good GBs of memory, so would it be wiser to just try it out, or buy another 4GB of the GSkill? 6 would be a bonus, but my original thought was just to use the 4GB of GSKill. I realized I'd get 6 keeping the Fatal1ty as well, but I don't want to cause any computer problems doing so.

Is what you're describing something that could harm the PC? Or something that could make me have to go into the BIOS a second time for something other than manually setting those RAM settings? I already plan on calling GSKill to have them walk me through that part, but I don't want to run into another BIOS issue mix n' matching if the safer route is just buying more of the GSkill,
