The "Fix my DPS" Thread!

First off, I play a survival hunter myself and do pretty well. I have been asked to help another hunter in the guild who's struggling a bit, and he's playing BM which I have no experience with. Hoping for some help here. The general hunter stuff (gems, talents, profs, etc) I can do on my own, I'm mainly hoping some experienced BM hunter can look through logs and tell me if he's doing anything wrong.

Is he using the correct shot priority? Are there as many Kill Commands going out as there should be? Is his Focus Fire uptime normal? Etc.

It looks good mostly.. He is using ToTH instead of Dire Beast for BM.. It appears the main issue is that he is about 15 gear points or more behind the rest of the guild, that is a lot. I think he is doing ok considering how badly under-geared he is compared to the others in the guild. He is at 510 and the warlock I looked at (who #6 on dps) on the twins fight is 527 item level. He has crap professions if you want to min/max things, but mostly I would say he is just under-geared.

Apart from what Cerealkillr said:

His stampede pets aren't optimal. He has dash on autocast (which costs focus which is a dps loss when you don't need dash) and his turtle isn't using his claw/bite/smack ability.

He's not doing his opener right, he could've had 2 more (if not 1) bestial wraths, rapid fires and his orc racial on just about every kill.

He also is losing out on a lot of kill commands. In a few attempts he could've had about 4 more every minute if he executed his rotation perfectly. So really, he could've had a few more every minute.

He's doing good with focus fire, I'll give him that.

I'd change his gem in his boots to a full agi gem.

His reforges aren't that great. Plugging him into wow reforge (the default stat weights are fine for BM), shows that he can be at the hit/expertise cap (he was below the exp cap) and trades ~900 haste for ~900 crit.



He can paste this into reforgerade (reforge addon)

Personally I would never take Fervor unless I was sure that the fight demands that I have near max focus ALL the time or during very specific situations that require instant and focused high-burst damage. Even then I'd consider saving my CDs and not use them on the boss and so far I haven't encountered a fight that made fervor a must. BM is certainly not starved for focus.

Next is reforging and gemming. You can keep the Glinting imperial amethyst in your helmet and the one on pants to get that nice bonus, but exchange the Shifting Imperial A. for a Agi/hit gem. You already reforged much hit into other stats so gemming for hit is not required, but get the bonus if 80 + bonus results in higher value than simply using a 160 Agi-stone. Reforge as much hit as you can into crit or any other useful stat. Don't socket for haste/mastery or even crit-bonus if it means loosing your main-stat. You are missing the second socket-stone on your bow, get it as soon as possible to max weapon-damage.

I noticed that your Serpent Sting often only has an uptime of 50 - 70% during the fight, that's too little. Can't comment on your rotation for that I'd need to see recount.

Unfortunately, even if you fix all these issues you will not likely see a dramatic increase in damage as it's more or less optimizing your hunter and the gear.

I have noticed that these two ideas go hand-in-hand. If you take Thrill of the Hunt or Fervor, you cast a lot less Cobra Shots. Ergo, your Serpent Sting has a much higher chance of dropping due to not being refreshed. Dire Beast provides a much more steady (pun intended) focus regeneration which allows you to continue using Cobra Shot. Plus, the whole scaling with Mastery thing is nice.

Ok Ill try Dire Beast, and see if it helps my serpent sting up time. As well as change up some gemming. But I don't see that making up the 40k DPS that I should theoretically be able to pull. I feel like there might be something I am just not doing that would cause my Damage to be so far off the mark. My goal is to be able to maintain over 110 DPS on average. I re-subbed at the beginning of MOP, coming back from after TOC. I have been having growing pains with Focus. I personally don't care for this priority system, Id rather have a set rotation imo.

Well, no one has a "rotation" anymore. That word needs to be removed from the vocabulary of WoW players. It's inaccurate and leads people to think that they can just repeat the same abilities in the same order and win, when that's anything but the truth.

Everyone has procs.
Everyone has differing cooldowns on key abilities.
Some classes have to change how they play based on haste (Focus regen, for example).

Get used to it man.

You need to keep in mind that femaledwarf (or any other simulator) crunches your number based an an ideal fight, one that doesn't include moving, switching targets, loss of buffs/debuffs or other factors. See if you can get close to the simulated number from femaledwarf on one of the boss-dummies and should you fail to get close to the simulated numbers, then you need to look at the way you regen focus - basically your use of your skills. Also, because so many of our abilities are now based on procs as are trinkets, you'll never see the same DPS in Recount because of that. In Wrath I made sure to practice on dummies to always achieve roughly the same DPS but that's no longer possible to achieve and actually I am quite glad. Fights are much more dynamic now.

Your numbers are close to what femaledwarf calculated so whatever DPS-loss you're seeing is most likely due to movement and target-switching, but I noticed you didn't use vermin's bite during council.

Hmm.. pretty sure I did, I may not have gotten off the prepot, so only used one. Our tanks like to charge in sometimes with no warning :P

Currently I need to delay my 2nd set of CDs because of the 1st Blessed Spirit but after that I'm a bit unsure what to do to improve. Any suggestions for the other classes are welcome too but I wanna focus on improving myself.

Killing Blessed Spirits isn't about using DPS CDs. It's about using snares, slows, stuns, etc.

never said I'm using CDs for them either, the timing is for me to use my 2nd set of CDs is when it spawns so I need to delay it, I'm snaring spirits and usually top DPS on them unless I'm sitting in deterr with a frostbite

Snaring a Blessed Loa Spirit shouldn't significantly delay CD usage other than dropping an ice trap...hence the confusion. Which CDs are you talking about? Black Arrow and Murder of Crows? Remember that you can always Readiness and put a second Murder/Black Arrow up concurrently on another target like Malakk not long after your opener. You can also use a mouseover or focus macro while also targeting the Blessed Loa Spirit to put use abilities on one of the boss NPCs. If those spirits are staying up long enough that you can't afford to skip a GCD on them, then tell your mage, spriest and boomkin to step up their game.

it's rapid fire and BA at that time, yes there's lack of focus on the blessed spirits from the others, boomkin had his first night there and he didn't quite understand the prios so it was usually just me and the mage (and spriest when he got swapped in) on them. The point of my post wasn't for the blessed spirits as they don't really get absorbed ever. It's about general DPS mistakes and ways to improve my DPS on that fight, I took a look at my logs compared to I think 13th best hunter on council HC (EU&US) and my damage output is almost identical to his % wise so I'm guessing I'm not doing too many mistakes that can be fixed.
