I'm looking to find some gems on the subject. I already know of Kurosawa and I've seen several movies by him. Ikiru might be my favorite movie of all time.

But I must admit my ignorance of Japanese movies and Japanese directors akin to Kurosawa. So I'm looking for pointers of where to begin looking!
