BlizzConline 2022 Event Cancelled - Reimagining Future BlizzCons

To the Blizzard community,

We’ve decided to take a step back and pause on planning the previously announced BlizzConline event scheduled for early next year. This was a tough decision for all of us to make, but it’s the right one.

Any BlizzCon event takes every single one of us to make happen, an entire-company effort, fueled by our desire to share what we create with the community we care about so much. At this time, we feel the energy it would take to put on a show like this is best directed towards supporting our teams and progressing development of our games and experiences.

Additionally, we would also like to take the time to reimagine what a BlizzCon event of the future could look like. The first BlizzCon was held 16 years ago, and so much has changed in the time since—most notably, the multiple ways in which players and communities can come together and feel like they are a part of something bigger. Whatever the event looks like in the future, we also need to ensure that it feels as safe, welcoming, and inclusive as possible. We’re committed to continual communication with our players, and we see BlizzCon playing a big role in that going forward. We’re excited about what we’ll do with the event when we revisit it in the future.

One more thing we wanted to make clear: even though we aren’t holding BlizzConline in February, we’ll still be making announcements and updates for our games. We’re proud of our teams and the progress they’ve made across our games. We have a lot of exciting upcoming news and releases to share with you. You’ll continue hearing about those through our franchise channels, with the talented people on the BlizzCon team playing a part in supporting these efforts.

We’ll miss seeing you, but don’t worry. We’ll be back together soon.

    Yep... that says it all.
They do not want to prepare nerd-themed convention for hardcore fans anymore.
They want to do an event for 'everyone'... and you know what that means...

Holy fuck... it is soooo sad.
As a kid i dreamed to be part of at least one Blizccon in the future.
Now when i could handle it financially i would not go there even if they pay me, lol.

Can't wait for the next actual Blizzcon to be the most cringeworthy bs of the 20s.

An event made by Twitter, for Twitter. Completely out of touch with reality.

Sorry guys, nothing to show this year, all our devs are busy with deleting and censoring content and doing paintings of fruit pictures…

Even worse off than I had imagined if this is they can't even manage a few videos for an online event. It's not like they're really having to go anywhere or do anything special like an actual convention, it's literally just them sitting down in front of a screen for an hour tops and talking about the features of the games and then maybe a 30 minute Q&A.

Then again, if I had absolutely nothing of excitement in my games, I'd probably cancel too. 1 patch for an entire year in WoW. The Overwatch 2 news basically being non-existant / poorly received even by the pros who have had hands on time with it and basically no news on any of the other games tells me it was cancelled because they literally have nothing to show, not because "it takes time and effort"

Also, wonder if they will ban skimpy cosplay from the next Blizzcon to be in line with their current scrubbing. Maybe we should get some girls to cosplay as fruit bowls.
no they wont remove skimpy cosplay, speaking they are not removing skimpy transmog.
The whole point is continuing to let players, and even npcs to be skimpy, the only reason they are removing current stuff is because of issues from abusers within the company.

March is still easily doable, specially if they get up the PTR in nov/dec

so you really think they said that because... if they didnt people would assume they are never going to make an update again?

They are literally saying "no blizzcon, but we will still be making announcements"
that implies the same timeframe, cause yeah of course they are not going to "suddenly never make updates again"

sadly i cant see blizz putting the ptr up this year since there no blizzcononline means they haven't gotten much dose in terms of 9.2

9.2 isn't really something they would base a blizzcon around, it would just be a footnote to other major announcements.

There's no way they haven't been smashing on 9.2 with how little is in 9.1.5 (specially since there zero new art assets in 9.1.5, means the whole art team has been working on 9.2)

or it means they want to anounce and put 9.2 on ptr in dec and would have nothing to anounce at blizconline...

Can’t wait to see how thrilling the announcements are going to be without the hypetrain that is Blizzcon.

8.3 came out in Jan of 2020, Shadowlands November of 21 with only one content patch this year. Now no Blizzcon. Final Fantasy managed to get an expansion in, Guild Wars 2 managed an expansion and end to living world season 5, Lost Ark is coming to the US soon, New World got dropped already. What a shitshow

this, its like people dont realise art team (and some other teams too probably) was not needed for 9.1.5 so they probably dont sit on their asses doing nothing...

Cancelling the online version is likely a result of not having substantial enough content to warrant doing a whole event for it.

At least they won't end up pulling a "Take Two at E3 2021" on us, right?

    ...Right?

lol, "re-imagining". The corporate speak is strong with this one. They shrugged off the controversy last time by opening the event with an apology, without saying for what, before plunging into a smorgasbord of game announcements. But without enough announcements to steer the narrative, and an even bigger controversy casting a shadow over the company, they chose to keep out of the public light with the hope that this one just blows over. And shame on the gaming media for simply regurgitating Blizzard's corporate speak as though it were the real reason for the cancellation. The headlines should simply read that the event was canceled, and that Blizzard "claims" that it is for these stated reasons.

I don't' believe that they have nothing to show. Believing that is moronic. I DO believe that they don't have enough to justify the event and the eventual "An event for just THAT" attention. I think with recent changes the next expansion is possibly being changed around a bit. Not a complete redo, but enough that an announcement might be too soon. I'd bet we will hear of 10.0 by Summer with an early 2023 (rushed) release.
