World of Warcraft: Dragonflight - Talent System Changes
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight brings some of the largest changes to the talent system since Mists of Pandaria!

  • The team wanted to give players more choice over what their character has
  • As you level, you get a new spell or ability that makes you stronger, but that is determined by the designers
  • There is now a Class tree and a Spec tree
  • The Class tree offers class utility and the Spec tree offers things that help you to perform your role
  • Picking a spec is an important part of your World of Warcraft character
  • The Class tree will have some abilities granted for free to start you off in the spec you've chosen and you'll have a point to spend somewhere else in that tree
  • The team wants to encourage players to make combinations that they've never been able to see before
  • This is an opportunity to put a lot more art and fantasy into the Talent UI itself
  • You'll be able to change talents at the same frequency that you do right now
  • You'll be able to make your talent build, save it, name it, and load it up again later quickly

I can't wait to go to Iceyveins, slap in the top spec, and never look at this again.

Perfect example of how DKs could get their tank/dps spec choice given back

That's quite sad. And one of the reasons they changed it all with MoP as everyone was talking about it like that.
I did whatever I thought good. Had a pure avoidance death knight tank in frost spec. I loved it.

Let's see how this will play out. I mean, the passive talents might not change THAT much, but it gives you a feeling of creating your own char and way. Our brain is funny at times.

Ya that's what ill be doing. Couldn't care less about going back to talent trees.

looking at the screenshots, it looks like they just stripped down all of the current talents and split them into this. I see Guardian affinity, frenzy regen, survival instincts and ironfir as separate talent trees when currently all of that are tied to 1 talent. In other words, they're pruning more so we'll end up with a convoluted system and less abilties.

Well they can’t win there will always be an optimal build in this game or any game

Well, the fun part is that someone will find a busted/broken PVP gimmick build that would be fun to abuse in random BGs (until it gets nerfed). I still remember the prot holy and shockadin builds back in the day.

If there is ever a choice between utility and throughput then you will never see hybridization. The only way to achieve that is to balance utility and dps SEPARATELY.
If blizz gave a utility budget to dps specs you might be able to have utility that actually matters.

So far i just see them slapping a new coat of paint on a shit system that they got rid of for a damn good reason. I honestly want to see blizz move away from classes entirely as they are incredibly restrictive, and id rather see fewer more impactful talents than more and less impactful.

Will have to wait and see how this turns out but im not optimistic.

I like that we are going back to trees, but they better add a macro conditionals we can use if a spell is available/learned. We've had the [talent:X/Y] conditionals for awhile which is really useful, but will likely be gone now... Its already been a pain that they haven't supported pvp talents with any conditional (no, the macros that use /script commands to alter the tooltip are not good enough. They also require pressing once before it updates).

We really just need something like [known:<spell>]. I'm a heavy macro user/writer and its already painful enough having to use addons to alter/swap out macros based on pvp talents/covenant abilities. This change to trees will likely break/remove those existing conditionals

With that venting over, I'm still sincerely happy to see trees coming back -- I'm just not looking forward to having to write/use another addon to manage something that should be built in by now.

    You do you.

In the meantime, a great many of us actually like playing around with options. I might actually come back for this expansion just to enjoy toying around with the new class and talent system.

BTW, when you start doing sims of your character, you will find out that their recommendation for top spec doesn't always play out that way if you aren't completely decked out with the recommended gear.

So from the photo with all the points put in, assuming this was done on a max level character and the 2 icons on the left side of both trees are passive milestone unlocks earned for slotting a select number of points into the tree.. We'll have 63 points to work with. If we have to actually use a point, then we have 67. Again, assuming these photos were supplied by a max level character.

These trees look good. I like having a class tree and a spec tree. I'm sure there will be cookie cutter builds like every game but hopefully there will be a few points that are left up to player preference.

How is that any different from now?

Now doesn't waste dev time, and is focused on major ability changes rather than a lot of +1% nonsense you have to fiddle with.

My point was that regardless of the complexity, in talents and soul-binds vs talent tree, theory crafters and those who sim will always find the optimal builds.
IcyVeins currently shows the optimal builds for talents and soul-binds per class and in the future they will show the optimal build for talent trees per class.
Trying to suggest that talent trees will require more thought and therefore will drive players to IcyVeins is a strawman.

Yes, because the current talent tree system that consists of 80% dead talents has proven its self to be immensely appealing.

The thing is with hybrid builds there's never gonna be a truly good build better than the rest depending on what you the player is trying to accomplish with your build. And with so many different sheets to choose from for the specializations you're always gonna be able to be optimal in dungeons and raids so there's no issues it's great.

    This...

I was definitely in the camp of Enhance Sub-spec Resto for 215% bonus self-healing and 0% mana cost totems. It was so stupid good, and then they destroyed the talent trees and it disappeared.
