The game services operated (including "World of Warcraft", "Hearthstone", "Overwatch", "Diablo III", "StarCraft II", "Warcraft III: Remastered Edition", "Heroes of the Storm"), and "Diablo : Immortal service will not be affected.

In 2008, Netease and Blizzard cooperated for the first time. In the past 14 years, starting with "World of Warcraft", we have introduced Blizzard's high-quality games to China step by step, and even achieved global version synchronization. Every time a game is introduced, we are extremely excited, and it also carries our blood and youth.

Inside NetEase, there are also thousands of diehard fans of Blizzard games. Therefore, we have more empathy for the player's mood at the moment. Before today, we have been negotiating with Blizzard with our best efforts and sincerity to seek continued cooperation in mainland China.

But after a long period of negotiations, we are still unable to reach an agreement with Blizzard on some key cooperation terms involving sustainable operations, the Chinese market and the core interests of players. Today, Activision Blizzard announced that it will suspend cooperation with NetEase, and we have to accept this decision. After January 23, 2023, the company will lose its agency rights and will no longer be able to continue to manage and operate these games that carry the memories of players for 14 years.

Next, NetEase will fully perform its duties and serve players until the last moment. We promise that we will do our best to negotiate with Activision Blizzard on issues related to refunds, game data, virtual property, and game rights that everyone cares about, so as to protect the interests of Chinese players to the greatest extent.

At the same time, we will work with Activision Blizzard to achieve "commercial for business, game for games", pay attention to players' voices, cherish everything players have paid for the game, and properly protect everyone's game assets and memories. We strive for both parties to formulate plans as soon as possible, start related work such as refunds as soon as possible, and will continue to inform players about the progress of related work through official channels such as the "Blizzard Game Service Center" official account.

Thanks again to all players for their understanding and support. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. If possible, we hope that Blizzard's departure is only temporary. After stopping the service, we will continue to stick to it in our own way and will not give up easily. I believe that people who meet each other can always meet again.

Blizzard China Statement
NetEase have also posted an official announcement on the Blizzard China website, mentioning that the servers for World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch and other games will be available until January 23, 2023.

Feel terrible for players who lived in those worlds.

What a slap in the face after having played wow for example for so many years taken away. Such a waste of time.

The game services operated (including "World of Warcraft", "Hearthstone", "Overwatch", "Diablo III", "StarCraft II", "Warcraft III: Remastered Edition", "Heroes of the Storm"), and "Diablo : Immortal service will not be affected.

pretty sure it will... anyway there's still a chance they can come to an arrangement.

It likely means some politician somewhere was the problem and they couldn't find a work around.

Could also be Mike Ybarra, CEO of Blizzard. I'm not sure who would be negotiating specifically with NetEase over Blizzard properties. Bobby is CEO of Activision Blizzard as a whole. Could also be someone in the political sphere of China, as there is some oversight from the CCP when involving foreign business interests in China.

That is the fate for most of us.
Maybe it won't be for 20 years or 40 years but eventually the game will end. Probably when the OG generation, the people who started young in vanilla/BC, start to die off and don't endlessly play anymore.

    Mhh,
Let me think… who could be that jerk? It’s can‘t be any of the designers who turned out to be jerks… the was this other guy Bill? Danny? Dave? Bob? A I think his name was Bobby… he was pretty good a cash grabbing, too.

In the end I don’t think both sides couldn‘t care less about the gamers… all they cared about was money. Even if it meant „preserving“ a 14 year old Chinese account, which was somebody’s favorite pastime.

At first I was like, "Wow, Blizzard actually standing up for human rights. Good for them!"

Then I realized, "Nope, this is just about money." Netease or whatever wanted too much.

Blizzard will just find someone cheaper or force them to renegotiate. This happens a lot with cable TV stations, and they always come back after a couple months of playing chicken.

Could also have been some Chinese politician wanting political concessions from Blizzard that they don't think they could achieve (e.g. no more anti-China rhetoric from employees/official events). The whole Hong Kong thing made them quite angry, and they lost CoD in China over it if memory serves.

Id say this is a fairly likely scenario, CCP politicians control everything, and if Blizzard refused to concede to even one point, it would be simple for them to kill the deal. And the president of Netease not saying who was the jerk saves him from certain political retribution.

On same token it could just simply be a money thing, but when dealing with China, CCP is always in the conversation.

I wonder if it is whoever had access to the official blizzard weibo account. As the Diablo immortal account made comments towards the leaders of China. The failed negotiations could be over some new oversight/demand related to that incident.

Only if Blizzard can't find a new provider.
If they do they will just be able to keep playing from where they left off.

Of course it's about the money. Everything is about the money. If ever in doubt, just remember that these 2 companies gave us Casino Immortal, so human rights and ethics are just non-existent.

It was kind of silly of you to expect any corporation to do anything for any reason except money. They'd do things for human rights if they thought that was profitable, only.

SO based on whatever everyone is saying, it sounds like bobby wanted more money that netease was unwilling or unable to pay and now they can't play wow anymore. sadge

Hopefully, this starts a conversation about DRM and what you actually own. We're talking about 20+ years of game data and it's all going to be gone in an instant.
