From deep beneath the surface of Azeroth, a mysterious voice cries out for heroes. But before these brave souls heed the call, they must answer to their own voices within . . . .

  • Anduin’s wanderings at last lead him to the solitude he seeks, until his peace is shattered in a heartrending tale by Christie Golden.
  • Andrew Robinson takes Gazlowe to a struggling goblin city, where he aims to inspire its citizens to more worthy ambitions.
  • Thrall grapples with his son’s coming of age in a heartfelt story by Jonathan Maberry about what it means to love and let go.
  • Delilah Dawson gives voice to Alleria Windrunner, desperate to connect with her son in a tense, bittersweet journey home.

These tales—besides more from Catherynne M. Valente and Courtney Alameda—portray the poignant, introspective moments set to proceed World of Warcraft’s highly anticipated The War Within expansion. As these larger-than-life heroes grapple with their next steps, a greater threat looms, one that will lead them to raise arms again to fight for the fate of Azeroth. Despite the chasm of varied backgrounds, allegiances, and choices that divide them, these tales prove that even in the darkest times, home unites us all.

Ah yes, all I've seen on forums, social media and in guild chat is people clamouring for more interpersonal 'heartrending' from Anduin, Thrall learning to love and let go and Alleria's new void parenting youtube channel..

Really wish they'd stop putting these extra lore tidbits that actually have crucial stuff in outside of the game.

I am all for them as long as they are contained in supplementary media or in low resource in game media like "stay a while" sequences. Imo the issue is when they monopolized cinematic time which would be far better used for action

Indeed, just what we want in WARcraft.

I n honestly, this kind of crap would not be a bother if it was in isolation, once in a while, but seems like every shit they put is something related to that, unbearable. the next book seems like its going to be fucking Lorthemar honeymoon, for Christ sake.

November 5th? No way the expansion releases that late which means these stories are going to me weeks if not months later after release. Will they even be relevant at that point?

    Exactly correct.

I actually quite liked Goldens Arthas novel, despite the feely feels. It's not bad to have depth to characters or big muscle guys with emotions; it's just bad when you can't tell the difference between the Orc Shaman, the Void Elf Ranger and the human Priest..

lol the replies in here are both expected, but no less hilarious. How dare blizz tell a story without constant sword-swinging and hairy men grunting nonstop? The audacity!

Yes because the alternative to constant sword-swinging and hairy men grunting nonstop is.. let me check.. ah yes, two stories about the struggles of parenting, one story about Saduin almost momentarily not being just sad until he is once again just sad and then finally a story who's high concept summary sounds more like the back of a local road workers union pamphlet than a typical Warcraft story.

Who is this for? Do you suppose the majority of people who have played games set in the Warcraft universe did so for stories like this? Do you suppose the majority of current players find this sort of storytelling interesting? Do you think this sort of story will attract new players to the setting?

Honestly I am genuinely curious because I don't understand why 'I like this' and 'this is bad for the setting' are mutually exclusive?

If anything, to me, the very idea that somebody in Blizzard thought this was a smart thing to do is concerning.

You said blizzard "How dare blizz tell a story without constant sword-swinging and hairy men grunting nonstop? The audacity!" but where are the stories like that recently? when blizzard told a story like that recently for this comment to make sense?

What does that have to do with anything mr strawman? Some of you want a super specific type of story and every time it's not that these threads are full of the same people whining about the same things, only wanting some edgelord stories akin to a 90s arnold movie.

Who's forcing you to buy this book? Who said you just HAVE to read it? Understand not everything needs to be tailor made to YOUR tastes. And if you find it has been that way for a long time, as you seem to be wanting to suggest, then maybe understand you're the niche ones.

You are the one that literally made the strawman

you are making up scenario that doesn't exist, that people are criticinzg blizzard for doing something different, yet, blizzard was not telling that kind of story before for your argument to make sense.

Sure, and its fine to do that, since you know, would actually be blizzard daring to do something different from a change, unlike your comment implied
Who's forcing you to buy this book?

    heh, classic moving goalposts.

Making several points at once is not moving goalposts lmao. It is a book about the relationships of characters in the warcraft universe wtf do you even expect it to be lol. If you don't like it or aren't interested then don't buy it?

And apparently I didn't strawman or make up anything since you seem to have felt awfully stung by the comment XD.

Unfortunately, this is an intentional marketing decision made by... forgot his name, happened years ago at this point. Really sold Blizz on the concept transmedia, where you spread out all the pertinent information about your IP across multiple platforms (in this case: games, books, etc.) to get more revenue out of your customer base. However, the heavily relies on there being enough information in each form of media that it provides a satisfying narrative experience as stand-alone content... otherwise you run into issues of not know motivations, motivations out of whack, parts of the stories feel like they're missing, lots of narrative aspects don't make sense or come out of nowhere, etc. Basically, it's not easy to do if you don't have a competent writing team. If you do it badly, you'll just end up pissing people off and having your customers lose investment in your narrative

So yeah, Blizz is still holding onto this method while still failing to execute it properly to gain much benefit from it (if at all). It's really easy to rationalize that it's still working if one mentally shifts the goalposts as time goes on, forgetting about lost potential from everyone that's already left or lost interest in your IP. There's obviously going to be people who don't care about the narrative at all, but removing/losing an aspect of your IP that keeps people invested in said IP is usually not a good thing.

This stuff costs money now? Short stories used to be free and only novels needed to be bought. At least it doesn't sound like there's anything worthwhile to miss here.
