IRVINE, Calif., Oct 04, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft(R): Cataclysm(TM), the highly anticipated third expansion for the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game*, will be released starting on December 7, 2010. The expansion will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows(R) XP/Windows Vista(R)/Windows(R) 7 and Macintosh(R) at a suggested retail price of $39.99 and will also be offered as a digital download from the Blizzard Store. A special Collector's Edition packed with bonus items will be available exclusively in retail stores for a suggested retail price of $79.99.

"Cataclysm includes the best content we've ever created for World of Warcraft. It's not just an expansion, but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "With the help of our beta testers, we're putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months."

The first two World of Warcraft expansions, The Burning Crusade(R) and Wrath of the Lich King(R), each shattered PC game sales records upon their release.* In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races — worgen and goblins — will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.

The beta test for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is currently underway. Not definitive, but pretty damn close, since it is coming from a Blue. Midnight releases at stores make up way too much marketing buzz for them to let people pre-download and activate at midnight. If they did that there would be no reason at all for anyone who wasn't getting a collector's edition to go to a midnight release.

    Like WoW needs marketing buzz

While I don't like the posters who brag about "blizzard not getting their money," this argument is just wrong. It is very like that the lull in content caused a very significant number of subscriptions to lapse. And this *is* how consumerism works. The company suffers a profit loss due to an inability to deliver product. Arguing that they aren't making *as much* money is invalid. When the chart goes down, CEOs are unhappy.

But, Blizzard's charts didn't go down. They went up. You see, they cleverly released another multimillion dollar game in that lull.

Why did everyone assume that'd be the "big announcement" at Blizzcon? I for one think that this years Blizzcon isn't going to emphasize WoW, but Diablo3. I think they "might" mention the next WoW xpac, give a general idea like how they did with WotLK... But in no way do I believe they'll do as indepth a preview as they did with Cata.

I don't know if you've been on beta, but its getting damn near finished. Its been getting polished up very quickly and theres still two months till release. In my honest opinion its too late, wish it was going to be released sooner..

Cracks me up when people think they're releasing it on this or that date for sales purposes. Like blizzard really needs to worry about cash flow right? Hah.

They didn't get to be a multi billion dollar enterprise by NOT worrying about cash flow. Don't be an idiot.

Well he is right, you want to stop playing and paying do it no one cares, not even blizzard. The time that they are releasing content and the next xpac is perfectly fine. It feels slow but thats how it always feels when you run out of things to do, you just want something new. They couldn't just release it 3 months earlier or 2, it wasn't ready yet, and there are still lots of guild that have not finished the current content. And just because they haven't don't go calling them failures.

Bottom line, no one cares that you stopped paying, we don't need to know, we don't care. We know why people do it.

I've honestly used digital download twice, and both times it was working fine for me, but that wasn't with another 2 million and a few other people hammering the blizz servers trying to get the game.

I'd say it'd download as quick as a patch (p2p connection) on patch day, so test the 4.0.1 patch 4-5gb download and see how long that takes.

If you're really bothered you could go to overnight releases

Haven't read all the posts, but for anyone who preordered from Amazon and had a delivery date of January 4th, you can now change it to a "Release Date Delivery" for no extra charge. I did this, and it now lists the delivery date as December 7th

Hmmm. I guess it's going to be some more stuff about Diablo III. But perhaps they'll be announcing some new thing that will totally surprise us! I think not though. (But I feverishly await Diablo III news anyway
