Legion Beta Key Giveaway - Week 5: Warcraft GO

New Silence Penalty Coming to World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft offers many opportunities to engage with other players in a variety of ways and to help support positive experiences in these engagements we wanted to inform you of a new silence penalty we will be implementing with the pre-expansion patch for Legion. Depending on the type of report, players who are found to be abusive in chat or engage in inappropriate chat behaviors may be silenced from engaging in certain ways within the game.

The Silence Penalty
Following the Legion pre-expansion, any player who is reported multiple times under the Spam or Abusive Chat categories will, after investigation, receive an account-wide silence penalty. While this penalty is active, the silenced player will find that their ability to chat with others is greatly limited.

Silenced Players Are Unable to:
  • Talk in Instance Chat (Raid, Party, and Battlegrounds)
  • Talk in global channels that are auto joined (such as General or Trade)
  • Create Calendar Invites/Events
  • Send in-game mail
  • Send Party Invitations
  • Send War Game Invitations
  • Send Invitations to Duel
  • Update a Premade Group Listing
  • Create a New List for a Premade Group

Silenced Players Are Able to:
  • Whisper to friends (both WoW friends and Battle.net Friends)
  • Reply to Whispers from Non-friends
  • Party/Raid Chat (with Invited Players)
  • Create Parties and Raids
  • Talk in Global Channels that have a moderator
  • Share Quests
  • Sign up for a pre-made group

The first time a player is silenced, their chat will be restricted for 24 hours. This duration will double for each silence penalty received after the first, and there is no maximum. This means that players who receive multiple silence penalties may find themselves unable to chat for a very, very long time.

Silenced players will be receiving a notification when attempting to send a message to a channel in which they have been restricted.

By using the in-game report tool to identify players who may be engaging in inappropriate interactions within the various channels, you’ll be helping create the type of community we all want to take part in.

About time they implemented this. There are so many toxic players within the game so hopefully this will mute them much faster, instead of having to report them and waiting for days for a ban.

    Good job, Blizzard!

You can always go outside and make friends while playing pokamon go.
Which is very popular I hear.

But again, what do you think you are going to achieve by berating someone in raid\general\trade\whisper chat to the point you get reported enough to be silenced? As a heroic raider, I loath LFR as well. I actually don't mind the AFKers and baddies as much as I do the trolls who purposefully do things to piss people off. LFR(as a whole) is for people with little to no skill or desire to learn, and no amount of head banging is going to fix that. I, myself, hate the people who feel the need to go off on the raid bitching endlessly about every little mistake. I'm much happier when that person rage quits the group.

For those that like to yell and scream at people, form your own groups and run normal mode. Make everyone join vent and belittle them all you want. Blizzard should make a pop-up for using the queing system that requires you to accept being polite to other people. If you don't want to do that, form your own groups

relax guys, there will always have investigation, its not like if a group of people will just clique the option on a player to mute him, blizzard will investigage first to see if they really have to silence him ;p

Welcome to real life indeed, where people are expected to be civilized. You know why there's behavioural codes in many places?

Considering I see the same spammers for days at a time, then it appears the investigation element needs improvement.
Lets just hope the introduction of a "lesser" punishment means they are closed quicker in minor cases, instead of debating whether a suspension is relevant.
Though admittedly the one case of personal harassment I felt the need to report was dealt with very quickly, if I recall in less than 20 minutes.

Though it is difficult to have faith in a system which doesn't seem to be doing anything about the most visible issue for many players.

After investigation? I hope they actually do investigate it and do so intelligently. This could work well.

oh blizz is becoming the internet sensitivity police, I can't see how this is going to be abused. I guess they can't afford to ban accounts, so might as well make people who act like assholes turn into pretty much npcs.

Great news! I can't wait for the next evolution of this where a picture and home address of said "troll" comes up after you report it so you can go round and punch him in the face!

Because too many people see spammers as " OMG why does this guy keep posting he wts stuff in trade chat, trade is for politics and religion bashing. Geez, stupid spammers" . Sorry, that's not what spamming is

As long as it isn't automatic, i hope that it doesn't get abused much. But blizzard also silence players who abuse the mechanic itself

I propose a new system: Every time a player is reported for hurting feelings, the one who did the reporting has to undergo intensive re-learning of core American values.

To be fair it just annoys the crap out of me that when you join an hc pug (guild is inactive till Legion) that people fail on the most retarded things, you kill 1-4 bosses max then pugs disband because the good people leave.. I had that 3 times this week.. And yeah that makes me a bit salty. The problem i foresee with this solution is that when you speak your mind, people will get severely butthurt and start reporting as maniacs. Sentences like: please gtfo away from boss with debuff will be seen as rude and abusive.

Care to elaborate why should non-americans care about your interpretation of behaviour in an online game with certain code of conduct that you accepted upon creating an account?

Freedom of speech as you americans put it, is not about being able to be complete asshat because you feel like it

If you're talking about "freedom of speech" you should re-evaluate your education. Because this is not what freedom of speech is about.

I am fine with this as long as there also going to be penalties to people who attempt to misuse it.

" we can finally start silencing these idiots who keep spamming trade chat with boosts all day. Hope everyone does that so that these idiots can fuck off. Well done blizzard!"

    lol

    best comment ever

calling people idiots when you already have a way of silencing these idiots PERMANENTLY.

p.s those people spamming trade for boost all day do it on hundreds of accounts this solves nothing

p.s.s they are not going to ban accounts for people selling boost or runs, cause its not against the TOS and its not spam if you post it a few times a minute.

But the question is what counts as abuse, different people see spam, etc different. I report any cross faction achievement trading and some obv spam in trade. Still goes on.
