Diablo IV - Quarterly Development Update

Warcraft Movie Tweets
Duncan Jones, the director of the Warcraft Movie, has answered questions about the movie and shared his vision of what Part 2 and 3 could have been. Note that even though the Warcraft Movie has the highest grossing world wide, there haven't been any announcements that the sequels may happen.

Duncan Jones: Thank you Kevin. We’d done the hard work. It’s a pity we couldn’t build on that.

Tweet: Can I ask, had you planned out the story for a trilogy of films (or more perhaps)?
Duncan Jones: 3 films. Part 2 would have been Go’el/Thrall as a young orc slave in Blackmoore’s gladiator camp. Here he meets & befriends a Tauren who tells him of another land to the west where his people come from, & where he might find allies & maybe a new home...
Duncan Jones: three, the gathering horde army and freeing of orcs around the Eastern kingdom before a dangerous trip across the sea to Kalimdor, & the founding of the 1st Azerothian city of Orgrimmar. Basically the trilogy was the fulfilling of Durotan’s promise to give his people a new home.

Tweet: Sounds truly great. Certainly epic. A shame we won't see them.
Duncan Jones: Yeah... it would have been something special.

Tweet: Do you think that some sort of sequel to your movie will be made? Shame that you won't continue this marvelous vision within the Warcraft universe.
Duncan Jones: I have no idea, and no one i worked with on the film even works at Blizzard anymore.

Tweet: Despite all that happened. I'm glad that it was made and to have seen it. I liked the details and fun little things in there as well. Plus it became one of the highest-grossing video game movies world-wide. (even though some expected more from it)
Duncan Jones: THE highest grossing world wide.

Small World of Warcraft is set on the fantasy world of Azeroth, where the races of the Alliance and the Horde—including Orcs, Dwarves, Trolls, and Worgen— clash in a world-consuming conflict.

In Small World of Warcraft, players choose combinations of special powers and races from the Warcraft universe, such as Portal Mage Pandarens or Herbalist Goblins, and vie for control of Azeroth. To help them achieve dominance, players will occupy legendary terrains and seek control of powerful artifacts. However, all empires must eventually fall, so players will need to be ready to put an overextended race into a state of “decline” and lead a new one to rule Azeroth.

Blizzard and Days of Wonder worked closely to create a game that seamlessly brings together both universes. Small World of Warcraft features a variety of new and exclusive artwork that captures the feel of the colorful and vibrant Warcraft universe, with races and special powers designed to be familiar to the millions of WoW® players around the world who’ve explored the far reaches of Azeroth.

The movie should've been about Arthas. He has more fans than all the characters from WC1 combined.

I had high hopes for the film because I loved both Moon and Source Code, the two movies Duncan had made prior to this. (The dude's David Bowie's son, FFS. How fucking cool is that?) But this film was very disappointing. It just felt... off. The CGI was not very good. The script was very meandering. You could tell Duncan was a fan of the universe and he did the best he could but it just felt very stilted and thoroughly uninteresting. The film was also released about 6 years too late as it came out in the middle of the WoD to Legion content drought which was arguably one of the lowest points for the franchise as a whole. Had the movie came out back around the game's peak popularity in 2009-2011, I think it would have had a much different experience at the box office (domestically). I'm kind of glad we didn't get any sequels because it really just felt like multi-million dollar funded fan fiction.

Thank you. I've repeated this to no end. Any Warcraft trilogy should have centered around Arthas. The general audience does not give a shit about good guy Orcs. I remember asking co-workers back when trailers were showing in theaters "are you going to watch Warcraft?" "No, it looks lame." How the hell are you going to get general audience members invested in a CGI Orc as the good guy? Protagonists have to be relatable. Thrall, Orcs and Horde in general should have been handled as villains and then supporting characters.

Taste is subjective. Arthas is their most marketable character, hands down. You go with what makes money, not with what the guy that plays 17 hours of the new expansion nonstop thinks.

Movie sucked imo. After reading that sounded like 2 movies of orcs.. no thanks

God, what awful movie premises. The retcons and fanfic for the first/only movie were bad enough.

Sounds like they dodged a bullet... the rts game had a better written story then the movie.

What would a tauren even be doing in the eastern kingdoms ?

Even if the movie was bad, it's still not as awful as other video game films, Silent Hill for example

I think the movie(s) could have been amazing. The issue is that it fell into the trap of being made for everyone, not the fans.

That's absolutely a problem. They should've just made a movie for the fans but still make it interesting enough for the 'outsiders' to have interest and wanna tag along for the ride.

I liked the movie , specially bc Travis Fimmel was on it, but my God doing 2 more movies about Thrall/Orcs? I would prefer the trilogy be about Arthas and the Lich King, it would fit so well in movies

To be honest I found the CGI orcs a lot more relatable and easy to like that the humans in the Warcraft movie. The humans were so stiff. Durotan and Draka at least had personality.

    Hahahahahahahahahaha... ahhh, hahahahahahahhahahaha!

Wow, all this time and even this site is still delusional about how well that movie performed. (Also I like how they stated that in such a nonsensical fashion--it has the highest grossing world wide what?!?; the only phrase that comes close to being accurate after that is 'bomb of the year'--that I'm sure some of the sycophants around here are going to try to add an extra word to try to rationalize it.)

If you only consider the American audience, it would have been one of the biggest flops of all times. In the US, it only made $47M.

It cost $160M to make and needed over $450M to break even after all costs. It made $439M globally.

It's nice to have "what ifs" but that was a movie series that is lucky to have had 1 high budget film let alone a trilogy.

That aside, I really would like the Small World board game, but man, I can't justify that price. It's $10 more than the standard game all because of the Warcraft branding.

It was only just beat out by Detective Pikachu as the highest grossing video game movie of all time. It was just the American/European fans that were upset it wasn't a story about Arthas who didn't like it.

Blizzard should just move to China then. Maybe they could even bring their message of inclusivity there, see how it works out.

Look, someone even designed new logo for them.

I didn't even watch it in cinemas. When I finally downloaded it I expected to completely hate it and only watched it because someone wanted my opinion on it before they watched it themselves. Turns out I ended up completely loving it, and I was heartbroken it wouldn't get sequels.

Until now, I guess. I expected the first movie to just show "grr ebil humans, orcs din du nuffin" but instead it was very balanced and it was nice to see someone who got it. That this everlasting war exists because both sides can have legitimate viewpoints yet still be stuck in a situation that goes beyond good or evil and where conflict is inevitable.

So reading the next two movies would just be horde wankfest about their founding is kind of disappointing. The removal of Medivh and replacing him with some Tauren even more so. Imagine hearing his iconic line "And now that my task is done, I will take my place amongst the legends of the past." but in a theater. What it could have been...
