Except "decade" while meaning 10 consecutive years, is also accepted to mean specific periods. In this case it would be 2001-2010. English.

22/7 was a big shock for me, it kinda made me wake up and realize Scandinavian countries aren't the perfect safe havens like I've been told. Makes me appreciate America even more

    A decade is 10 years....so from 2002 to 2012.

Not weird, because that happened 11 years ago (Decade = 10 years). I read the title as the last 10 years. Anyway.

Last decade as in 2001-2010: 9/11.
Last decade as in the last 10 years: Heath Ledger's death.

    Statix will suffice.

To avoid any silly arguments, let's change the thread title to "biggest shocks since the turn of the century".

Biggest shock to me would be the fact that Palestine is no longer considered a country by most Western nations.

For me, it was Heath Ledger's death.
As has already been explained in this thread a decade often refers to a specific time period in which case last decade is 2001-2010 and this decade is 2011-2020.

For me it has to be 22/7 since it's pretty damn close to home.

Michael Jackson passing away was pretty shocking.

And the fact that the US is still going further in debt.. wait nvm...

The ongoing shootings/killings like in Norway and the Movie Theater in the US.

On more trivial levels.... M.J's passing.
Above all else in that matter...... Justin Bieber's success.
Untalented, mediocre at best. But still a teenage mega star. Shocking.

    OT -
The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster. That came as a total shock to me.

One of my more simple/amusing ones:

Richard Prior dying....Not that his actual death was the shock for me. The shock part for me was because I thought he's been dead for the past 20 years before then! I was like "What the hell!?! He's been ALIVE for the past 2 decades!?!" :P

EDIT: on that note - I'm surprised (and kinda glad) nobody is bringing up Michael Jackson's death.

I think I was the only one who, when seeing the announcement, actually said "Well, no point in turning on the TV for the next 2 weeks!"

Nothing really, human nature is terribly predicable and redundant. People have made the same dumb mistakes over and over in history. Stupidity will never die.

Economic collapse of the US. Growing up in a poor country hearing about all the wonders of the US I never thought it could fall into an economic crisis. I was a kid too so..

As a Classic Series fan of almost 30 years... this should effect/apply to me... but sadly my opinion of the new series is very low compared to Classic. >_<

I think I was more shocked by the rabid fanboy defense for the BBC's blatant Americanization attempt of the show than the show's return itself.

Oh yea that horribad conclusion to the lost series.

I guess the bigger shocker would have been that they were all actually still alive and reality was just crashing in around them eh?

Oh and my biggest shocker from the last decade would be that the American Car Industry is still so behind Japan when it comes to making Fuel Efficient Cars.

Or more specially that they haven't managed a battery for mass production that can get more than 100 Miles per charge.

I mean com'on, 40k for a car that can't get you from Philly to NYC and back is pretty sad.

No more star trek TV, 9/11 (if talking about 2000 - 2010) , MJ's death, 22/7, Heath Ledger's death, 2008 US collapse, America electing a black president
