For me, I heard about the show being praised left and right, so I decided to check it out. The show is genuinely great. They were aiming for something that would be appealing to children, but at the same time it wouldn't be an eyesore for the parents to watch with them. With great writing and wonderful voice actors the characters are given depth; awesome animation makes for an awesome setting; the songs are beautiful and catchy; and there are a lot of references hidden around.
The biggest thing about it isn't the show though. It's the community that has spawned around it.

Monks are cool. Especially history monks. They can control time.

So apparently "Cadet #2" was originally supposed to be Wildfire, but they had to change it for whatever reason.
And if you look at the cloud-busting scoreboard...
Welcome!
So there's a lot of things that make MLP appealing. Part of it is the animation. Part of it is the characters. Part of it is the community. To me, some of its appeal is that it's OK for kids without being overly preachy. I don't always want to watch something super serious, so it's nice to have something a little more lighthearted.
There's always terrible things going on in the world, and it's nice to have a little patch of fun and innocence.

I was making a reference that, as far as I know, only one threaddie would understand and he doesn't post nearly enough.

Merry Christmas.
In totally unrelated news, here's your snarky phrase of the day:
"It's kind of like pulling teeth from a platypus."
You're welcome.
Was it Frey who asked about War Z?
TB tears it apart.
