Why isn't holy spec called light spec?

When shadow spec is well.. shadow, and not- unholy?
A priest saying that he specialises in light/shadow magic sounds more fitting than saying that he specialises in... holy.
    Seems inconsistent ;]
Current naming seems outdated since whole "light" is no longer based on christian religion but rather chinese philosophy, namely "yin yang"
for paladins "holy" still fits tho, as they are by default "holy warriors" but priests understand/control/use the other side too.

What is void to a shadow (and vice versa)?

A bunch of spec names are silly when you stop to think about them.
"Oh my god, you're a rogue?" "yes, I specialize in the arts of being an outlaw!"

It's because they use the holy school of magic. Like arcane/fire/frost for mages. That's all there is to it really

that's the point, priests call for powers of light and shadow

actually it would work like that if there was general naming for both of these primal powers, so far I don't think there is (but we can fit in discipline for such rogue, but its not "quite there"), for mages arcane is just a general source of power, which then gets "enhanced" to either frost, fire or stays in its raw form

How nitpicky can someone get? LOL Leave it to us WoW players to be this cynical and critical of such a miniscule thing.

Hell, why aren't you bitching it's called Guardian, Feral, Restoration and Balance instead of Burr, Kitty, Leaves, and Moon?

    DK: Cold, Evil, Messy

    Lock: Fiery, Filthy, Portal

    Pally: Revenge, Hammers, Flashlight

    Mage: Ice, Burn, Purple

    Priest: Light, Shadow, Bubbles

    Rogues: Hide, Poison, Pirate

    DH: Mad, Supermad

    Etc etc....

Take a look at the Chronicle power map here: http://assets1.ignimgs.com/2016/02/1...jpg-c74967.jpg

"Light" is the high level power encompassing the Holy school of magic
"Shadow" is the high level power encompassing the Shadow (Void) school of magic (which is what priests use even if it's called the same thing)

    The current specs make sense

This. Holy is the type of power used by the Light. Shadow is the opposite of Holy. Unholy is actually affiliated with Necromancy in WoW and would be opposite Nature.

If you did any amount of research whatsoever, you would realize that holy makes perfect sense for the spec name.

Its can't possibly be true, even from a grammar PoV, holy is just adjective for LIGHT in this case, so for any not devoted follower of light (let alone shadow users/followers) Light is not any... holy.

While you are at it, maybe you could suggest changing void to "black" or "darkness"(or "brown", just because its swag)?

This is incredibly stupid. You're overreacting and your examples don't make any sense.

Wait, who were the lords of Decay and Spirit?
A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.

Holy is to light what sword is to iron.

Well feel free to show us your research.
You kinda have to, considering you're the one stating there is any to be done.

That's not what the OP is saying. The power of the void is called shadow. There is no name for the realm of light yet. Your comparison doesn't make sense. Shadow is to void as light is to ???

I agree with the op. Holy and unholy are generic terms, but shadow refers to an element. The healing spec should be called light.

If you call Holy for Light. What are you going to call Discipline(half-light-half-paladin)?

It's called a fucking joke, or have you never heard of experienced a "joke" before? Record yourself talking and play it back sometime. Fine example.

Being disciplined enough to command shadow magic without becoming an insane cultist like shadow priests.
