You're a military family who uses base housing, aren't you? Military has nice perks that allow this more than other families.

I have non-military friends who manage to squeak by, but it's tight for most of them.

I still pay rent and utilities in military housing. They privatized the housing back in ‘08, I believe.

Privatization is generally a poor idea as it does nothing to control costs when there is no marketplace competition that would naturally do so.

I believe he's given additional pay for the purpose of housing. I think it scales with the zip code too. So, yes, he's not *really* paying for housing.

Yeah that's what I thought, I was confused for a sec because I have friends who are military who have talked about housing allowances before. Also my dad was military before becoming a commercial pilot.

People also seem to assume that military members make more in their MOS than they would out in the civilian world. They don’t. My dad, for example, was getting paid half of what he is now when he was in the Army (doing the same job).
