(NO SPOILERS) Anyone else a little disappointed with the Black Panther movie?

As can be ascertained from the thread title, I've been to see the Black Panther movie, and I gotta say, I was left a bit disappointed. After a brilliant introduction to of T'Challa/Black Panther in Captain America - Civil War, I had pretty high hopes for the solo outing. His intro was intense, and the action scenes he was in were brilliantly put together. However, very little of that made it through to the solo movie. In fact, 24 hours after watching, the memory has faded so much faster than ANY of the other entries into the MCU, which I usually and up discussing for days afterward with friends. Don't get me wrong; it did have highlights. Killmonger was excellently played by Jordan, Serkis was typically brilliant as Klaue, and the acting was solid throughout. But as a whole package? It was, for lack of a better word, forgettable. Now, there is promise in of a good sequel, and that arises from the first rolling credits sting (no spoilers), and the post credits sting leads nicely into the upcoming Avengers - Infinity War (again, no spoilers), but these can't save what is, in all honesty, a distinctly average movie.

Please note that this is just my opinion, and it's based solely on the movie and it's story. I respect the opinions of any replies that agree or disagree with mine. Regardless of the title, I invite discussion from folks who loved the movie too. But please, lets not go down the route I've seen in some other discussions on other sites where racially charged comments start flying. Folks are politicising this movie, which i doubt was the intent of the creators. With that in mind, lets keep it civilised

I'm kind of annoyed with the trailers. I haven't seen it yet but all of the other Marvel movie trailers have orchestral, a-typical dramatic music but this ONE movie, because the cast is black, has rap layered all over it. Is it like that in the movie?

In the entire movie I only had one ''wow'' moment and that was when Black Panther started fighting at the beginning of the movie.

Other than that, to me personally it's one of the worst Marvel movies so far. I liked the recent Ragnarok miles more than I did this.

I disagree. I enjoyed all of those way more than I did this one.

I liked it. Far better than the average Marvel movie these days. They are generally getting a bit bland with every movie trying to be flashier, more funny and having even more "bad ass" enemies that can destry they world by just snapping thier fingers.

It wasn't as ridiculous (well, as non-ridiculous as a Marvle superhero movie can be) this time around.

I disliked some parts of it.
Deff expected more and thought shuri was the typical gadget person that introduces stuff to James Bond.
Didn't enjoy one of the only two white people in the whole movie being called a "colonist" by her.. but eh if black people commit racism its fine, right?

I think it was just an "ok" movie. I like they pointed out the political situation of an over-developed tecnological country with the other nations and what type of international relations they should reach, pointing out the general pros and conts of both stands (isolation or international share) although I belive it could have been a bit flesh out.

The music abuse a bit on aboriginal tunes, though they were fine for a lot of scenes I felt that in some action scenes didn´t felt so well.

    The asthetics were on top.

The charactes and plot felt kind of a debacle to me, the main protagonist and family was outstanding but the rest of the cast aside for some exceptions lack a lot of development, specially the main antagonist wich had a very narrow storyline with just one goal in mind wich was to be the opponent for the main guy. This last point is actually very sad because there were a lot of scenes where they could have try a lot of things with this actor that could have potreyed a lot more of internal conflit or dilemmas in what he wanted to do without even hurting the main story or even affecting its ending, instead it was just pure hated from a irremediable story arch that force the "bad guy" to be who it was, wich is something that we´ve already seen a lot in marvel movies.

In the end, to me it is just an average movie that is a bit different from the rest of marvel movies, has an impresive production but misses a lot of opportunities to create something unique.

@Aggrophobic......In terms of the subject matter of the MCU movies, being sourced from fantastical characters in comic books and all the story source material that comes with it, what do you class as ridiculous? One of the things I like most is that with Superheroes, especially in the Marvel sense, there doesn't have to be a limit on how implausible the situations, as long as those situations remain within the context of the story and the characters therein.

Yes, of course. I mean, it's not like Black Panthers stunts would really work in reality and he's clearly "ridiculous" as well in that sense.
It's the over the top stuff like Ultron tossing whole cities in the air, aliens invading earth, Loki ending all life (or was it just light?).
This time it was not the world being messed up it was just one small african country and really, just two guys fighting it out. It felt like they took it down to at least somewhat believable levels.

That and the fact that the actor doing Black Panther is pretty good at what he does.

I'm not saying the movie is the best that ever happened but I still liked it.

@Aggrophobic.....Isn't that the whole point of the Marvel movies tho....to bring us ungrounded fantastic situation with just enough reality for us to be able to relate to the "humanity" of the heroes (and sometimes the villains too). To use your example, the idea of an unfathomably advanced, self aware AI creating a device that raises a massive amount of landmass with the purpose of dropping from a sufficiently high altitude to create an Extinction Level Event is utterly unbelievable in real terms, but within the context of the subject matter, is completely feasible. Doesn't the subject matter provide the avenue for the suspension of disbelief, much in the same way that almost all Sci Fi/Fanatsy source material does, World of Warcraft included?

That aside, I do agree with you about the acting. With a couple of minor exceptions, all parts were well played by their respective actors and actresses. I always have time for Angela Bassett. She was AMAZING in Strange Days.

    It was ok.

The whole first third is pretty slow because it's mostly just world building. I liked the world they built, but it was a slow ramp up laying it all out. I think there were big subplots cut out (Such as Okoye and her bf - that was all a bit random).

I thought the casino scene was cool, and the hand-to-hand fight scenes were good, but the big fight at the end was a mess of spinning CGI dummys.

Likewise, I think a lot of the supporting cast were great, but they pretty much all took away from T'Challa. He was overshadowed by pretty much everybody in his own movie. He was even absent for a quarter of the film and it didn't really matter.

Maybe you're right, I just feel like they are taking it a tad too far by trying to make every movie that much more spectacular than the last one.
Heck, I remember when I thought Kraven, a dude dressed in dead cat with a net, was bad ass enought for Marvel.

If they really want to go crazy though, I'll take a World War Hulk, thanks. No censoring what so ever please.

A lot of people overhype side characters who just have to look cool for five minutes. When it's actually time to put them in the center of attention for a whole story, they fall flat. I'm sure that's also the case for Black Panther. (Although he wasn't even that fucking cool in Captain America anyway.)

It was a good Marvel movie, falls in line with what we have seen before...nothing amazing.

    I liked it.

I've heard it's massively overhyped by critics (which was obvious AF), but still a good film.

It's not really like that no, rap music is important though in a manner of speaking. Throughout the movie they tend to have whoever is in 'command' or whoever has the most power in a scene have music that represents them, so the rap music comes on whenever a specific character that's more represented by rap is doing something big. Can't spoil too much else but there's a solid variety of music in the movie. Orchestral, traditional African and rap are the three most prominent ones I believe.
