10 year old boy needs surgery after 8 hour wow binges.

    Source

Boy, 10, was so addicted to gaming he needed bowel surgery after he stopped going to the toilet during eight-hour World of Warcraft binges

Children are developing long-term health problems because of the time they spend gaming or glued to devices, a leading doctor warned yesterday. Jo Begent, a paediatric consultant, said a boy of ten had come into her surgery with a deformation so severe that at first she believed it was a tumour. Further examination revealed the child had developed a dilated bowel because he had stopped himself from going to the toilet so he could carry on gaming. The boy was playing World of Warcraft, Call of Duty and FIFA for eight hours at a time, Dr Begent said.

Dr Begent, who practises at University College London Hospital, said: 'I was doing my general paediatric clinic one day and a boy walked in, a ten-year-old limping and looking really poorly.'He had a mass coming out of his pelvis and I panicked and wondered if he had a type of cancer.' Checks revealed he had appalling constipation and his bowel had dilated.

'His bladder wall was so thickened,' she said. 'When I took the history in better detail this boy was gaming so much that his bladder and bowel were so deformed because he had stopped going to the loo.' She said he had been so distracted by gaming he had ignored basic bodily urges. Dr Begent, who was addressing the annual conference of the NSPCC, said gaming and social media were increasingly affecting the physical and mental health of youngsters. The issue had 'crept up on us', she warned, with an exponential rise of cases in recent years.

She added: 'The sleep and obesity issues are the things we first started noticing – but these more profound physical health issues are just dawning on us now.' Some children risk their hormones being affected because they are not sleeping enough. In dramatic cases, Dr Begent believes young girls who are ignoring meals to be able to stay glued to their devices could be at risk of stunting their development. She said: 'Hormonal pubertal development can be affected if they are low weight. And indeed obesity can affect pre-pubescent development as well, if you are very obese you can get polycystic ovaries – that might affect your periods.'

Worrying about beating another player on video games such as Fortnite is also damaging children's bodies far more than just a fleeting moment of stress, she warned.

I hate seeing this happen to kids but I have to wonder how does it happen?

    8 hour WoW binge?

Those are rookie numbers in this racket.

Also these Kids literally sound autistic, not addicted.

Clearly the fault of the parents in this instance for not monitoring his play

So somehow 8 hour gaming binges added up to days worth of insane constipation to the point that he developed bowel deformities. The math doesn't really check out. Why wasn't he using the bathroom at any other time and what the fuck were the parents doing? Maybe it was just worded poorly but this sounds like days/weeks of trying to hold it in rather than 8 hour streaks.

I didn't realize it was physically possible to hold it so hard that your bowls could physically deform like that?! I mean, seriously, wouldn't the pain be freaking excruciating? How do you get so absorbed in something that you could manage to ignore that?

And fuck, for that matter, what exactly are you doing that requires 8+ hours of non stop, uninterruptible focus? Surely there must be some point (like when you hop on flight path or something) where you could just step away from the computer and take a dump.....

Hmm I used to do this when I was 12 to 18 and I had nothing like this, interesting, also I recently had my bowels checked via ultrasound or what it was and it seemed fine.

This is not an issue. These are parental problems. Stop behaving like you have no control over your children and these issues will go away. My parents would let me game all day on weekends sure, but if I stopped eating, going to the toilet, showering or being interested to go out for food? They'd drag my ass out of there.

Gaming is not unhealthy, completely ignoring bodily needs and functions obviously are, but that requires SO MUCH MORE THAN A GOOD GAME. That shows severe psychological issues and conditioning, something that is solely the blame of shit-tier or absent parenting.

    Either that or autism.

Now I often ignore the urge to eat when gaming but when I need a shit, I need a shit.

If your only source is Daily Mail...perhaps don't make the post?

Also, this sounds first and foremost like a parenting issue. If a parent avoids appropriate adult interaction (themselves or a caregiver if they are at work) for 8 hour stretches, it’s no wonder the child will develop an affinity for and dependence on a system of value/worth/gratification. Roughly broken down, a third of the kid’s day is spent at school, a third of it spent sleeping and the rest in front of a screen. In which of those segments do the parents interact in a meaningful way and on an ongoing basis with their child? Is this a generational issue where children of the 80s/90s are now raising kids on the same medium upon which they were raised and the parents therefore expect frequent instant gratification in exchange for a few moments spent interacting with their child from time to time?

If you read some statistics from other doctors, teachers or scientists or who ever makes such things, that about 30-50% of kids from the age of around 6 to 10 years are not able to do a somersault, because they are afraid, then you don't have to wonder who is responsible. One part are parents who let children play only with crash-helmet and the other part are towns where no real 'playing' outside can happen because there is not enough space for it.
Many children never go into the woods and climb a tree or splash through a creek or things like that. If they do something like that, they do it in video games because that is not dangerous.

    8-hours? Bless. What a rookie.

I wonder what he found so appealing to go on a 8h session to begin with. This is not 2004 anymore... I can barely play 2-3 until I get bored.

I've done a few 30-50 hour ones myself, but I don't forget to eat, drink or go to the toilet. That seems a bit...irresponsible.

Usual: blaming a video game / gaming for the stupidity of people.

And now people will blame it on the game.

I keep saying this, not everyone should be allowed to have children

Why was a 10 year old allowed to even play for that freaking long with no supervision? :S

    Parents failing at parenting.
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..

You didn't have your bowels checked by an ultrasound, especially at that age.

I remember this skinny girl came into the ER... everyone thought she was pregnant. Instead she hadn't taken a dump in "at least a month." They had to surgically disimpact her... just thinking about all this makes me feel like I have to take a dump. But then my diet doesn't consist of fried chicken tenders, flamin' hot cheetohs and energy drinks.
