Most of the examples cited specifically refer to cases of either hot or cold conflict across a heavily-armed border. The USA and Mexico are allies, not enemies.

$5 billion is what has already been appropriated to border security. What Trump wants is full funding of the wall, which conservative estimates place at around $25 billion. That doesn't include the hidden costs of the government claiming imminent domain of private land where they'd need to build, that doesn't include the environmental costs to local wildlife, that doesn't include the cost of maintenance after the wall is built.

Given that the debt was jacked up by an additional $1.5 trillion by the GOP with their tax cut for the ultra wealthy, it's no real surprise that congressional democrats have zero interest in giving an more money for a wall.

Also, we were told that Mexico was going to pay for it. That alone is enough reason to deny funding.
