First Person To Attempt Editing His DNA With CRISPR

Josiah Zayner, CEO of the biohacking-promoting startup The Odin, held up a syringe. “This will modify my muscle genes to give me bigger muscles,” he told a packed room at a biotech conference in San Francisco in early October.

In front of dozens of onlookers, he leaned against a table and jabbed the long needle into his left forearm. Then he took it out, wincing a little, and added, over applause and chuckles of disbelief, “I’ll let you know how it works out.”

I commend him. Those who are brave enough to experiment on themselves are the ones who advance science very heavily.

Good job. I will use my magic time travel powers to tell you that it didn't work.

He should have tried stem cells.

Zayner himself admits that his experiments over the last year haven’t visibly changed his body

Would've been a first if Hubcap actually read his own source.

I wonder why it didn't work. They should test his DNA and see if the changes actually went through or not.

I don't know what he'd think would happen. Even if he made a biopsy, edited some cells and put them back in, they'd probably just die like any other cell. He cannot edit any meaningful number with whatever means he might have had.

That's fair. The only thing I can think of that would make it work would be a retrovirus that can spread the changes, but I'm pretty sure that's sci-fi nonsense.

    Today it's science-fiction.

Next year, it could be science.

And five days after that, it's the zombie apocalypse.

The technology is easy and cheap enough to be done in a garage, but that doesn't mean everyone who does it in their garage is going to have it work. Gene editing is complicated and still not fully understood.

We'll get there. Sooner than you'd might think. Remember what computers were like 20 years ago?

He could have bought a weight set off Craigslist for less than the cost of that lab equipment and actually got real results.

I don't even understand how editing the DNA of an adult human could be possible - especially with a needle. This sounds so fundamentally bullshit.

You can edit the DNA of a single cell, like a sperm cell or an egg cell - then let it replicate from there on.... hence you create an edited human.

An adult human consists of 37.2 trillion cells.

Who'd have thought! I really hoped that some random idiot with a needle made himself into Captain America. What a letdown I tell you.
