I don't mind laws that protect people in their formative years. Once they hit 18, they can browse all the porn, drink all the beer and smoke all the weed they want.

It will only take a few minutes and any guy or girl desperate enough will be viewing porn even with this silly law. If parents want to control what their kids see online, stop allowing them private and unsupervised access to the Internet. Don't allow them to have their computers or phones in their own bedrooms. Put the device in a high traffic family room.

Stop tossing wild accusations around. I do wish you lot would stop banging on about it. See, man - it's just a non issue.

    I'll just leave this here.

“A man will contend for a false faith stronger than he will a true one,” he observes. “The truth defends itself, but a falsehood must be defended by its adherents: first to prove it to themselves and secondly, that they may appear right in the estimation of their friends.”

Why do you subjectively say "it is as simple as that" when it objectively is not that simple? Like how much effort do you put everyday into being wrong?

Protecting underage from things to mature for them is fine.

The problem is the kinds of ultra conservative parents and busy bodies who make it their business to want to not just age block adult content, they want it removed entirely from society, and will use their kids to achieve their own selfish goals.

These are the same kinds of people who decades ago would call heavy metal rock a work of the devil. And all that does is give kids the mind to defy their own patents all the more.

Smarter people do things like teach children, allow then to discover things. I think by the time they start to become sexually active, like 15±, that letting them discover stuff for themselves and being a support for them if they have questions is the only rational thing to do. If you restrict them, they will just fight back all the more.

Less effort than you do to tell other people their opinions can't be simple or correct?

It's going to be more on the sites themselves, not the ISPs. ISP blocking will apparently be the last resort which will again be circumvented by simple VPNs. There is also the measure of how much will be blocked and what constitutes as porn. Are all naked scenes in shows and movies banned? What about cartoons? Social media sharing?

It's the UK government taking the imitative and putting effort to enforce age verification. Is it worth the time and money? Is it worth the possible breach of privacy?

Thank God I wasn't a teenager in UK, you can't even jack off... That's utterly ridiculous

Is anyone stupid enough to think this will have ANY effect on the porn habits of teenage boys? Some church lady flexing a bit to no avail while a horny 16 year old will find a way around it...with ease.

How will they enforce this on sites like reddit? Its not a porn site but there is plenty of porn there.

I don't really think VPNs have anything to do with it. Your average 16 year old might be able to arrange this, but your average 12 year old wouldn't.

The whole issue is to do with parental responsibility.

If your are not computer savvy enough to know how to stop your 12 year old from accessing porn, then you really are a bit thick. Doesn't need puritanical legislation cloaked in the guise of something softer.
