Vietnam blogger jailed for six years for Facebook posts calling for peaceful protests

An environmental activist has been jailed for six years in Vietnam for “anti-state” Facebook posts, as part of the country’s continuing crackdown on social media.

Nguyen Ngoc Anh, a shrimp farming engineer, was sentenced to six years in jail for “making, storing, disseminating or propagandising materials and products that aim to oppose the state of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam”, related to a series of Facebook posts from last year.

Nguyen was arrested in September for sharing and writing Facebook posts which allegedly urged people to take part in peaceful protests in June.

For those in the cheap seats, this is what an attack on free speech looks like.

Not racist fucknuts being banned from Youtube.

No. And it is something worth fighting for. But you need to have it incorporated into your Constitution or laws. Many countries do not have it as a right.

Great thread OP, but market research just came in and actually it's terrible.

How can we spin this and blame it on Trump?

I didn't know Vietnam signed our Constitution, protecting their free speech. I'll update my knowledge now, thanks!

Governments can stop enforcing them whenever they feel like it. Nothing to stop them. What rights you have are also dependent on the territory you are within. Rights you might have in the US might not exist in other countries to the same extent, if they even exist at all.

In America we have a few laws that can't be tampered with. Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are two such rights.

We don't, but the hashtag outrage wouldn't exist if it were the latter instead of the former. Also, less hits for advertising.

Is there a point to your posts other than to open your mouth and show your ignorance?

There is no such thing. All laws can be changed, including your constitution.

Definitely every single person here, myself including, takes our freedoms for granted and eagerly attacks the "western" civilization.

She's right though. Human rights are worthless in practice unless your government enforces them. If they don't, there's no external force that will enforce them for you and you don't have those rights.

They are one and the same. Free speech doesn't only apply to people and ideas you find acceptable but to all.

More like, they have to if they want to continue existing in countries.

Why do you thini governments enforce them? What is the origin of those rights?

People protested and demanded those rights.

Bootlicking of the worst form tbh.

Because with no government to enforce them, they wouldn't exist at all. Might would rule.

With no government another form of government would pop up with its own set of laws. Governments are just ways people organize, there is a level of consent in that, might requires people to handle the weapons and do what you tell them to, if they dont want to you dont have "might".

Rights exist because those governed organized and demanded those rights, if the government simply stop enforcing them then at a more local level it would be enforced by communities if they believe in those rights or people would protest demanding it be enforced
