Not to complain too much, but 3000 dollars for 3600/2070 super system is way overpaying..

But nice of you to build it for your friend

Considering the GPU and CPU together are ~800, nah.

I'm not disagreeing that someone overpaid, just that it's an 850 dollar system.

He must have filled it with some extra cash.

It was an exaggeration but regardless his statement of it being a $3k pc hurt my brain.

I think I found the system OP made:
    PCPartPicker Part List

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($167.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Formula ATX AM4 Motherboard ($599.99 @ B&H)
    Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-4800 CL18 Memory ($864.99 @ Corsair)
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($449.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Palit GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB GameRock Video Card ($962.48 @ Amazon)
    Case: NZXT H700 Nuka-Cola ATX Mid Tower Case ($299.99 @ B&H)
Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Titanium 800 W 80+ Titanium Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($315.12 @ Amazon)
    Total: $3659.56
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

It's actually more than 3000. This fulfills everything OP said about the system, a 3600, a 2070 super, 16gb of RAM, 800w PSU (there's only 2 on PCPP) and an NZXT case.
Could get it more expensive too, since I took the cheapest 800w psu, 2nd most expensive RAM, 2nd most expensive GPU, and had to step down from a 900 dollar board to be able to fit it into an NZXT case

Oh, and it doesn't have a decent cooler, just the stock one.

I didn't realise people actually bought those motherboards.
    1) Load the amount of weight I would deadlift onto the bench
    2) Unrack
    3) Crank out 15 reps
    4) Be ashamed of constantly skipping leg day

Get yourself a Hero instead, same board pretty much just with heat sinks instead of waterblocks on the VRM.

    Pretty much no one does.

    What the actual fuck...

I feel bad for your friend, I really do. If the build Temp name linked is the one you built.. I'm at a loss of words.
    Pairing a 3600\2070S up with a 1500$ motherboard+ram kit. Just stupid.

Imagine calling yourself a hobby builder\sysadmin and then proceed to build that monstrosity for someone you call a friend.
I hope this is a troll. If its not, you should feel ashamed of yourself, ripping off a friend like that.
And to think he had to save up money for it as well..

    Big oof

I mean, it likely isn't, but.. I have no idea where else he'd have spent that money. CPU+GPU should be the most expensive parts of your build. Maybe if you're super low-end the PSU is, but.. With ~7-800 dollars in the CPU+GPU, you need to seek out ridiculous things to spend the other 2200 dollars on.

*maybe* if OP meant he got the build and 2-3 1440p144hz monitors? But that's still only ~1800-2000, and with the shipping he said he paid that's 2000-2200, leaving another 800-1000 still lost somewhere in the aether.

OP, on a serious note, did you not do your research fully? This seems excessive. I also live in California. Southern Cali to be exact. Newegg HQ is about 15 minutes away from me. Im in West Covina, CA. CyberPowerPC and iBuyPower are also about 8 minutes away. Could he have gotten something "better" or maybe the price difference ~1,000 less?

Do you have a parts list?

I was looking to get a Hero VIII for my first build (Ryzen 7 3700X, 2070 Super, 16gb Vengeance). I was curious why no one buys them? Overkill? I was getting it with the intention of upgrading processors the generation after next, but keeping the Mobo? Poor strategy?

I'm just going to assume that a good portion of that was for packaging and shipping guys.

I really want to see the actual parts list now, because yeah that seems excessive.

Boutique PC building is just like boutique fashion, because that's essentially what it is for the people who go out and buy $3k PCs...

They want it to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible and be able to claim "I have the BESTORZ PC!" Ergo, just like how apple keeps re-releasing the same phone and charging arms and legs, and how people still flock to them, same thing happens with high-end PC parts.

Dropping 3x the cost of a normal tunable mobo is indeed stupid to me as well, though
