    Scariest shit I've ever seen

I found both The Ring and The Grudge profoundly disturbing. To this date I still consider them the scariest films I've ever seen.

I thought Kairo was pretty creepy too. One scene in particular of a ghost dancing in an arcade was really effective. It was just a dark shape that initially looked like a woman but when it began slowly moving it started to blur and shift in an odd and indistinct way. The imagery stuck with me.

The remake is still one of the best horror movies of all time, but because of that it becomes too widely known and it loses that scare factor. Look at Exorcist or Jaws, still phenomenal movies, but the scenes that traumatized people are no longer "special" mainly because the movie is so popular and influential.
Honestly the Japanese version was never really that scary, the US version is far superior and watching the Japanese version has the feeling of watching a cringey high-school project.

When I first watched The Ring (american one) in the cinema back in 2002 (I was 17 at a time) it scared me shitless. But after watching Scary Movie 3 for like 10ish times, I just couldn't handle laugh when I tried to re-watch The Ring in a few years. It just spoiled The Ring to me completely lol.

I mistook this girl i saw for my friends sister who I hadn't seen in a few years and was supposed to be meeting us at a club. I tapped her shoulder I said "remember me?" And she turned around and both knew instantly I had made a mistake, but I immediately swung into a high-pitched "when I killed your brother, I talked JUST LIKE THIS."

And well her and all her friends hung out with us for the rest of the night.

Putting good memories on top of a scene i already feel infinitely nostalgic for makes that a hard story not to share.

I thought it was cute when it came out... then again I'm not bothered by most horror movies. Unnatural movements more often than not bring me out of the moment as I try to work out how they achieved that effect on screen. I would say I the day and age is irrelevant... it just wasn't scary.

there is a vhs videotape with pretty weird images - scenes in it and if you watch it, you have to make someone else watch it or you die in a week.

It has become a meme. People don't fear something they laugh about.

As a teenager, it was scary.
As a young adult, it was not scary.
    As an adult, it's stupid.

The Ring doesn't age well for the fact that no one uses VHS anymore, but for the time I could definitely see why people would get scared shitless. It doesn't help that it got meme'd to death. I find it a good movie (maybe one of my favorite horrors) but I always found it more towards a thriller than a scarefest.

How so? the movie doesn't give an age that I can find and the novel puts her at 19+

For the US version... Samara is ~10 and the actress that portrayed her in the first film was 12

She was about 10 years old at her time of death.
