They have rich storytelling in the book but not the game. The Sylvanas book paints such a better picture of Sylvanas and Zovaal. We get to know her motiviations, that she distrusted Zovaal until the end of Legion, that she felt she wasn't part of the horde but played the part to protect the forsaken. And the same for Zovaal. We get to know he was the arbiter and saw it all, saw how bad the shadowlands work with the kyrian doing their job without thinking, maldraxxus only protecting the shadowlands and ignoring all other threats and how families, friends and lovers get separated in the afterlife dispite doing the right things while they lived. Also his prophecies about Sylvanas that became true. In the book it's a rich and compelling story where we get to know the motiviation of the characters, understand why Sylvanas trusted Zovaal and get that tought that maybe he's the good guy after all.

The problem is that it's all in the book that came out when the expansion was finished. That story should've been in the game. Give us a 3 or 5 Minute video where Sylvanas talked to Anduin and told him what she saw when she threw herself off of icecrown and met Zovaal or just give us a piece of paper we find in torghast where we could've read that. It's such a shame that they have christie golden who is a competent writer but doesn't get involved in actually writing for the game but is instead only hired as an advisor.

While the sample size in question is statistically valid, that's about all that is. A valid sampling would draw from the WoW playerbase as a whole, rather than the biased combination of active and former WoW players that represents a tiny fraction of the playerbase as a whole that is this forum. It's basically the equivalent of a political activist with a sizable following on Twitter putting out a politics-related poll, and using the results of that poll as a gauge of how the population as a whole feels.

Problem is you are referring to the abundance of storylines in WoW, the blue post is literally talking about "rich storytelling" or the quality of storytelling which people are rightfully criticising.

I mean if you go look up the book series Twilight on their publisher's page, they probably say the same thing. Because why wouldn't they? It's their product! Now I think that Twilight is a steaming hot pile of fucking garbage but there are plenty of people out there who think differently. does this make me wrong? or them? (it's them, but my point is that lots of people like the story too but just don't say anything - people only get vocal about things they dislike as opposed to things they like)

Speaking of middle school books, you ever read animorphs? That shit was dark, and morally dubious at times. Ranging from stealing clothes and food to get by, all the way to straight up suicide missions and genocide.

And its a kids book series. Wow's writers can't even touch a kids book series from the 90s.. shame.

Or here's a wild thought. Do not release a book that explains core aspects of your own story and actually put that into the game. If you have to make a book to explain even the most basic of motivations for characters, especially after everything has already gone down in the game, then it is an utter failure in every respect. The book existing just makes the story even worse when as an audience we now have to move between several mediums just to puzzle things together.

totally agree. I think a lot of things went wrong with scheduling over the Shadowlands era, for example the book was meant to have been released ages ago; it would've been a nice tie-in to 9.1

That has to be one of the worst possible examples to choose for the premise of "only critics are vocal while fans are silent" argument, all I can say you must've never accidentally been in earshot of or bore witness to a Edward vs Jacob fan blood feud or Bella worship event and I'd say you're a sensible person for doing so. On a separate note, being critical of aspects or the whole of something especially when there have been evident issues or problems on display doesn't perclude said critic from also having been or still existing as a fan of said property.
