Playable plant races have been done before, and are still available in other MMOs. I played one in DAoC before WoW came out. They look relatively similar too, though I forget the lore for the older of the two.

i am not the type to play female toons like ever but when i saw the apparent love and attention to detail that went into the redesign i was really impressed. not that i will play a toss salad as a main but i will definitely play one now later on. but after seeing the following who can blame people for liking the Sylvari?

Possibly the sexiest harelips I've ever seen.
I must admit that I think of Sylvari as an "elf like" race, too.
Not the WoWish/Tolkien one but e.g. in Magic the Gathering there were often "plant based" elves, looking really similar to them.
(and they even stated that they sometimes take some inspiration from there for gw, if I remember right)
The advantage of the dreamer is that he never has to face the chains of reality.

I imagine the fae type of elves were a bit of an inspiration. Well the fairy mythology in general was for sure.
I think the only reason why they get any kind of comparison to tolkein type of elves is because the designers put Vulcan ears on them.
I like the Sylvari, I do not however think I will play one until later. I'm more of a..Charr/Asura type of player. I love everything about the Charr. They're badass!

Wow you guys are way off of what I originally meant by "bush whacking". You see since the Sylvari in general tend to be a somewhat feminine race. Combine that with the fact the bush whacking is slang for, well............You know what! Let's just forget the whole thing!

For me, its looks. While I'm still "on the fence" whether or not my main will be a Sylvari, I'll still play one with in the first hours of playing GW2 to see how much character they have, and how the feel. I like the idea of a plant life-form, but I don't know if -I- will be able to play anything but a Ranger or Theirf Sylvari because none of the other profs seem to make sense with the "nature" theme of the Sylvari.

I dont know, personally dont understand why anyone would want to be anything other than asura =)
An original race of plant people. Not people wearing plants, and not plant monsters, but plant people. Their design is absolutely astonishing.

I find them ugly as sin, and will most likely never play one.
they looked better in the original "races video" where they looked more like woodland elves, and not Fungus people.
Bow down before our new furry overlords!
No you're right. They're the "plant-elves" of Guild Wars 2. Yes they are different in many ways, but are also alike at the same time.
Then again I could say that Charr are pretty much are the smart-military-brute-race of Guild Wars 2 too. Could do that for any race. But I think I'll just take them for what they are and be happy.
>_>

O'Doyle rules! :P
Hrmmm, fungus people look much different than Sylvari...
Myconids (fungus humanoids) from D&D 4e-
And a random Sylvari picture-
