Re-Posting the Limit Break trailer here, from Kenshin's thread.

    Looks more like FFXI 2.0.

I'd be more excited about this if it was the EverQuest 2 of the FFXI franchise. A proper sequel -- because I'd honestly be interested in what ends up happening to Vana'diel in the distant future. Instead they took the original game, gave it a fresh coat of paint, and put nearly the same races and creatures (going by the above trailer) in a somewhat different setting.

I know FFXI is aging. But it seems silly to me to have effectively taken that game out back and shot it just to make nearly the same game again from the ground up in a new engine. I'm sure the game is different mechanically, sure. But it looks so much like FFXI that it's unnerving to me. Just wait. One day they'll scrap this game in favor of FFXVII.

(and before anyone says FFXI development is still happening -- while technically true, that game's staff has been reduced to a skeleton crew directly because of the FF14 project. There's a reason it's last expansion launched in 2007)

Currently playing Borderlands 1 remaster. Amped for Borderlands 3.

honestly, a game that looks like FFXI 2.0 is a hundred times better than what xiv used to be. And hopefully we find there's some new innovations too. I never really had the chance to play xi myself so I'd be glad to try out a good variant.

I can see where your coming from, and tbh if they could have just done FFXI on a new engine it probably would have been better then what XIV was at launch. That said, XIV's "innovation" was to be the unique combat system / class system they were introducing. While the class system works (Known as the armory system- quip an axe you are now a "warrior", equip a bow you are now a "ranger" etc) the combat system had flaws in it that ruined that aspect of the game; there was more than just the combat system that ruined it FFXIV 1.0 though I'd rather not get into that.

XI's staff was a skeleton crew before 2007, but the game had a history of taking forever for expansions to come out so judging the crew based off of that info alone is a little biased. Long ago when FFXIV 1.0 was first being buzzed about, the original director said they looked into what made FFXI so widely popular, even out side of japan. So its no coincidence that Similar looking Races exist, along with "similar" starting areas- Gri'dana = Windurst but with out the water. There is a bit more, but I don't feel like getting the proper research done to show why the 2 are similar.

    9 was good? GOOD?
IT WAS THE FCKING BEST GAME I EVER LAYED HANDS ON!
the graphic was awesome for that time. the story was amazing, character design was the best ever. remember how cool vivi was?
i love this game so much. but i liked 13 as well. 13 has a solid story, i liked that it was so linear because i play it mostly for the story. the fights were actually not that easy and sometimes you had to try different things for bossfights. also lightning's characterisation is ike REALLY good. 13-2 on the other hand was pretty bad imo :-/. kind of killed the ending of 13, fights were to easy i litteraly never changed my paradigm, story not good, boring.

10 was brilliant, its been average since then. As to this new release, a saturated market already, I hope it does enough to stand out. I know for a fact I wont be playing it, purely because I dont have the time.

I didnt play it yet, Alpha phase 1 and 2 are only for japanese (Firsts phases have too much bugs and is easier if u have not to translate every report)
post phase 2 alpha will be worldwide, and you can sign up here: http://entry.ffxiv.com/alpha/index_na.html

I saw too a low quality video, and seems really good performance.. really too much good for an alpha phase. Luminous engine seems very polished (FFXIV use a variation of Luminous Engine especific for MMO games created by Luminous Developer Team)

    Some new Japanese players screens:

Sigh this forum need a bbcode like [IMG width="600"] :S

    (Edit) some important notes:

    • Water is not finished in some areas
    • Physics engine is not in (beta)
    • Shadow/Lighting still needs few tweaks
    • AA is not enabled in graphics settings (but you can graphics card profile it)

The alpha has been specifically designed just to test and is not the most up to date version of the game, in-fact it only comes in at about 3-4gb big because you don't need more than what you need to test.

    Also remember:
    Images are resized
They are still images, nothing beats moving lighting/shadow/effects etc
They're jpg images so they compressed (reduces sharpness)

Tried it a few months ago and it said it required an active FFXIV account. It seems to still persist till now, and there doesn't seem to be much of a way to obtain the game unless you already own a copy. Digital seems awol, and I don't know how physical copies will work.

Least to amazon it says released Dec 31 2013. Which is quite a long way.

Can't wait, I had high hopes for XIV. I used left over gems to purchase another month and it gave me the chocobo mount and reduced payments for 2.0=) Have they announced when they will be releasing it for NA alpha/beta? I couldn't find a digital copy of the game when i was looking and had to find my disks =(

dont worry about digital copy, Beta is a completely new client, if you have an alpha or beta access, they will give you a new client. And Release game will be able to download, you have not to buy it again if u bought the 1.0 version.

And if i remember correctly, they said first month will be free for all players who have bought a copy to test it.

    Luminous engine
I don't think it's the Luminous engine, although I do believe the engine was created by the same studios so they are similar. As long as it's not the v1.0 engine, that can only handle corridors (at least as far as PS3 goes)

Ehh 9 is probably my favourite to be honest. I'm highly anticipating A Realm Reborn though, even so to purchasing the game for an incredibly cheap price in waiting and after playing the beta a couple of years ago, it looks a lot lot better now than ever. Plus, if they keep to the same subscription model of being cheap then depending on how I feel about the game, I'll probably subscribe to it.
