    [Music] Appreciating "old" music

Am I the only one? I mean, looking around these forums for examples; most ppl seem to listen to, what is in my ears crap.
Even on an every day lvl one can take crap, for listening to Led Zeppelin while going about thrusting ones groin (as you do).

So please tell me, am I the only one who still salutes Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabath, Sex Pistols, CCR, Metallica, AC/DC, Dio, Jimi Hendrix, The Who etc etc etc..

Also, what made me post this, is that i found a version of Comfortably numb, where David Gilmour playes this:

    - It just blew my mind. Ofc I know the original but this exact version gave me goosebumbs, and I listened to it around 50 times. I linked my mates it, and 4/5 were like "Dude.. naaah"..

So am I the only one?
Btw I'm 22, grew up with this, my dad made me listen to The Wall before going to bed for example. If it matters to any of you.

No you're not alone mate. Most of my friends also listen to todays music(Which I don't like either) but they still appreciate most of the old legends.

P.s Now that you mention it, time for some CCR ^^

Edit: Have you heard Gilmour's red sky at night? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJEBN2nH9ds

You are not alone, bro. I am fascinated with the level of talent and dedication it must take to create the kind of music you mentioned above. I am personally a big fan of Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal on most days, but...this kind of music...hell, any kind of music that involves this caliber of dedication, skill and love to be created blows me away.

Thank you for such a great topic, I hope more people view this then just the dedicated few I have seen so far, because in my mind...this is MUSIC!

You're not appreciating old music, you're appreciating a genre-specific, small selection of classic artists over a 30+ year span. It's pretty easy to remember who the classics are -- conversely, it's hard to remember the MASSIVE amount of other hit artists that were their contemporaries, ending up being completely forgotten because their music really wasn't that good.

Honestly, it's hard to tell. One of the common sweeping generalizations is that music from the 60's/70's/80's was better than modern music, and examples of that include all the artists mentioned in this thread (and usually some King Crimson, Cream, etc). Not that there's anything wrong with listening to older classic rock and its derivative subgenres -- I'm just here to make sure people are reminded that older music is not inherently better (and furthermore that one should listen to more stuff than just what's in mainstream media right now if they want to get an idea of what modern music sounds like).

As far the link you posted, Id likely be one of the 4/5 people that said "ehh", even though I love the song and Pink Floyd in general. Guitar solos without the context of the song bore me to tears (that's also why I don't like a lot of the technical instrumental bands out there).

Anyways, if you like Pink Floyd I'd definitely suggest checking out the newest Cynic EP, Carbon-Based Anatomy.

Draws from its influences without ripping them off.

I wouldnt go as far, as calling a taste in music a generalization. You want to remind people that older music is NOT inherently better? This thread is not meant to be manhandled by the opinion police, I am simply asking the question; if I am the only one who appreciate this type of music.
I have the feeling that I have misunderstood you, but I also have the feeling that you're just getting off-topic for the heck of it.
Btw I agree with your point, that more people should listen to older music, to get "music" in its whole.

Also, that sounded wrong. "Opinion police" - Damn.. That sounds rather suppresing. Didnt mean it like that.. It's meant in a "Dont put words in others' mouths" kinda way. Makes sense?

I get where you're coming from. My only issue with that taste, as you call it, is it's extremely "safe". I guess what I'm saying is that posting that you prefer "old" music, then listing classic artists really resonates more as "I love the classic music from this time period" rather than "I prefer older music". There's absolutely nothing wrong with that (artists like Pink Floyd, Hendrix etc are fucking timeless as far as I'm concerned), it's just that when it's also stated that modern music simply sounds bad to you, I get the feeling that you haven't really listened to much modern music to really make a reasonable comparison. I mean, artists like GaGa, Beiber, 'Lil Wayne, Nickelback, etc also sound bad to me -- I'm 100% with you on modern pop music sounding bad -- but what you may hear on the radio, or what many people are likely to post on internet forums simply doesn't do a good job representing modern music.

To draw a parallel, something that comes up often here in Hip-Hop music threads is hating the genre, then proceeding to post about how Eminem is the exception because he raps about "real" things, not "bitches and money and cars". The problem with a statement like that is that nearly every single Hip-Hop artist that isn't on MTV raps about "real things, many groups to a far greater extent than Eminem does.

I suppose I came off as a little too hostile than I intended, and for that I do apologize. However, I do implore you to listen to more modern music if you can. Listening to stuff in a comfort zone is great and all, but there's almost nothing more awesome than discovering new music and finding out that it's awesome. In the meantime:

Electric Ladyland is one of the best albums ever written.

I totally agree.. Sorry if I sounded like a douche.
You're right about my opinion on modern pop. But modern music in itself doesn't catch me in the same way, I guess its the guitar missing. You dont find a lot of awesome solos or riffs anymore; Its mostly powerchords nowa days. I tend to like some modern music, like Edward Sharpe - Home. And Brother for that matter. Even Jay-Z has got me knocking my head around. But I'dd still only refer to that as "Alright, kinda cool" instead of "Fking AWESOMESAUCE"..
Also when I get rather drunk, I tend to have a crush on old Irish folk music and/or bagpipes.

My points is, rather large "like" on most music, but it's the "love" thats missing for me nowa days. On music that is, so there's no confusion.

    This guy here:
Is pretty awesome.. The blues'kinda touch is kewl. But he died, so that sucks. Please, if you find some modern music with nice guitar and nice vocals - DO link <-- Relative to the topic, ofc.

Hmmmm...Thrice's newest album might be up your alley. Hard to tell because they're one of those bands you either love or hate, I've found. They don't really have guitar solos and they're pretty subtle as far as showing off their chops goes, but they do have impressive riffs and have a lot of blues-rock elements.

I don't think music like that is dead, just most of it's being neglected by the mainstream tv/radio stations.
It's fucking nuts though that people my age go nuts for musicians like LMAFO (they piss me off for some reason), atleast around where i live the most advertised radio stations play a tiny portion of music out there, and its only tiny because its only one genre, mixed with maybe one or two unique songs.

There's still heaps of young people out there with their own taste in music though, the other week i met someone who knows all the stuff i listen to and likes them more than i do, i think it depends on if your parents played their music when you where little, so glad they did

Who the hell would be mad at you for listening to the older music?
I almost only listen to older music, and I'm 15, and that's because I just think gradpa's music was better than my own generation's music (though my grandpa grew up in Somalia :P). I love The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Who, the Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Animals, Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Billy Preston, Queen, and a lot of other classic rock bands. It started because I grew up with rap music as a kid, and then at 12ish I started looking for meaning rather than catchyness in my music. Well as we all know rap has a terrible message, and if you ever listen to the lyrics you are disgusted by the content matter. Then I quit listening to 90% of modern music at that point, then magically I joined a guitar class one day (around late 13, early 14ish) and I met a cool kid who's probably gonna grow up to make the next rush, and he introduced me to the Beatles. Since then it's been classic rock all the way (for the past two years). I find the musicians that are actually playing their own instruments, writing their own music, and aren't being propped around by the music industry make the best music, and to be honest it's a rare case to have musicians that's not like that now a days.

That solo version of Comfortably numb is actually pretty damn epic.

I got a lot of old music that I listen to every now and then.

Tracey Chapman is fave. She is a godess.
Kate Bush.... she is a genius.
Bruce "the boss" Springsteen ... my dads fave artist so grew up listening to him. Got my dad and mom tickets for his show(this upcoming summer) as xmas present. Love songs like I'm on fire, Secret Garden etc.
I love a lot of Italo Disco as well.
Marvin Gaye is boss as well. Love a lot of old motown funk/soul.
Love a lot of the stuff that came from Manchester in the 70s/80s, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Joy Division etc.
Morrissey of course, man is a god.
    Pixies, The Smiths etc

I could go on and on.

I love a lot of music, both modern and old.

ps. demsbo, you are danish, get yourself to the roskilde festival, I used to go there when I was younger 16-20(im 27 now), even if you don't like "modern" music you are bound to discover some bands that rock. I feel too old for those kind of music festivals nowdays(i go to these 1-2 days festivals we got here in the city instead, where you can actually go home sleep in your own bed and take a shower lol), plus my girlfriend would probably rather kill herself then live in a dirty tent. lol

The nerve is called the "nerve of awareness". You cant dissect it. Its a current that runs up the center of your spine. I dont know if any of you have sat down, crossed your legs, smoked DMT, and watch what happens... but what happens to me is this big thing goes RRRRRRRRRAAAAAWWW! up my spine and flashes in my brain... well apparently thats whats going to happen if I do this stuff...

I'm the only person I know that has some Led Zeppelin on his iPod.

What is wrong with this statement?
"I see nothing. I hear nothing. I taste victory."

"Trolling (verb): speaking your honest opinion." - you know who
