I like RPGs with either a strong story/character building element or good gameplay. Basically any bioware game or a turn base rpg combat system is win for me. Love me some pokemon, and DA:O is my favourite RPG ever.
Don't like games which rely heavily on "finding your own adventure" by giving you crappy combat and story. I'm looking at you Bethesda.
as for RPG Type, Turn Based console RPG, probably just because it's what I played most as I was growing up
as for actual GAME.. oh it's tough... sssooo tough...
it's gotta be a list :P
Panzar Dragoon Saga: EPIC win, not just because with the Japanese voice-over it sounded like they were calling the main guy 'Wedgie'
Final Fantasy Tactics: soo mmuucchh wwwwiiiiinnnnnnnn Orlandeau>You
Shining Force 1&2: aaah the memories the LONGEST 5 mins in gaming history, waiting for the 'And More!' to appear once you've completed the game, to give you a chance at the oneshot final 'super boss' battle
Final Fantasy X: Yes the story was retarded, but I LIKE my games to have stupid storylines :P also Blitzball was pwnsome and Auron is a GOD, can't wait for the HD remake.
Phantasy Star series: any game where you main char has kids, and you continue on the game AS those kids is a game for me. Also featured the most badass robot/car/boat/plane with a gun in HISTORY.
but if I HAD to pick one game.... it would be tricky but I think it would have to be..
Shadow Heart Covenant: In my opinion close to a perfect game, AWESOME combat system (Mind's Eye FTMFW), GREAT storyline (semi historical.. kinda ) EPIC characters (Seriously, name anyone, ANYONE and Yuri Hyuga could kill them ) and hands down some of the strangest moments in RPG history. Like trading pornographic playing cards to a homosexual tailor, so in return he'll make tiny, perfect dresses for your living Doll. Or how you get one of your chars ultimate weapons by picking it up off the floor, what is it? A Mini Submarine, or your main character, whose ultimate Claw weapons you have to collect.... FROM THE MOON!
I think this pretty much sums it all up for me: http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/10/13

Used to be Skyrim. Love it. Rolled two characters on both sides of the factions and my last is now lvl 81.
BUT... the combat is a bit sucky after thousands of mobs.
"Kingdoms of Amalur" - If I was the a theist, I'd say this is the work of the devil. On my PC, with the 360 controller, it is just a bag of awesomeness...
I wish WoW could use whatever graphic engine they are using as well. Orgasmic game. Completely.

Fallout or Mass Effect. Oh and GTA:San Andres. I played SA like it was an RPG.
Favorite RPG series: Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Elder Scrolls, Fallout.. I'm sure I'm forgetting many more
As for favorite stand alone RPG.. Eternal Sonata was a pretty awesome game.
Most of my time has been sinked into Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Skyrim(harddrive died recently and lost sooo much time worth of savefiles.:'[ )
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Mass Effect 1/2
Fable The Lost Chapters
Knights of the Old Republic
All epic games imo but right now my favourite is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Story line is brilliant, the world is very large (not quite as sandbox as Skyrim but a lot of freedom nonetheless), combat is really awesome and the boss fights are great. Definitely recommend Reckoning to any RPG fan.
Skyrim, Warcraft/WoW, Pokemon/ GTA ( I sometimes play them as if they're RPGs :P)
Howay the lads!
Earthbound has been and always will be my go-to RPG when I'm bored. I LOVE me some Earthbound. Still don't understand how that damn crow always turns my skip burger deluxe into a fricking cookie though!
Just finished up playing the Xenosaga series on PS2 again, good cutscene-driven storyline and I've always liked sci-fi oriented RPG's.
I have to go back to the beginning and choose the games that got me into gaming in the first place, when I was about 7 years old on our old PCJr. For me it has to be the King´s Quest and Police Quest series from Sierra. When I was a kid I used to play KQ and dream about something like WoW...apparently some developers in California were having the exact same ideas
Everquest / Final Fantasy Tactics. Perhaps years of my life have been dashed between the two.
/played 10-12 years. :c
Final Fantasy tactics for sure. Great story, fun job classes, a lot of customability, and in my opinion, a lot of replayability.

Anything from Bioware before 2010 really
Baldur's Gate I-II, Neverwinter Nights, KotOR, Dragon Age: Origins, both are classic masterpieces
Talking to Majordomo before we are all ready will give you a quest: [60][R]Looking for guild!
Baldur's Gate 2, The Witcher 2, Mass Effect, Deus Ex HR.
Never really got into japanese RPGs or anime so can't really comment about those.
I generally go for RPGs with a good deal of polish, an interesting narrative, memorable characters and a fairly decent combat system and a sense of direction. A reasonable level of challenge is also really good.

If Metal Gear Solid does count id say that was one of my favourites for the PS
Kingdoms of amalur reckoning <3 Also the elder scrolls series.
Sig by the amazing Shyama! <Ascension 16/16 H 25man oceanic>
Golden Sun for the GBA popped up the moment I saw this thread, so I'll have to say that. Nothing in my video game experience so far has compared to taking out the Fusion Dragon with only one member of my party left.
You ask for more? Then come, traveler, to the Whispering Deep, where only the mad walk.
