    Tempted to try RIFT

As the title says I'm sorta bored with WoW atm and I only stick around for raids and the social aspect. Since Rift is currently fairly cheap on steam I thought I'd try it, but beforehand I was wondering if you guys could maybe tell me what I could expect before I do buy it. That and is it even worth buying at all?

When I started Rift I found myself asking "Why this and not WoW?" .. couldnt figure it out, so I went back to WoW.

Rift and WoW are very very similar in many ways and both heading in the same direction. If you want a new MMO, wait for GW2 or Tera.. very different style of MMO coming out soon.

I was playing it yesterday and it seemed pretty cool. Got to level 2 though so not much of an opinion. My computer can barely run WoW, so if yours is similar you probably won't enjoy it too much.

My computer would be able to handle it, quite simply im just looking for a new game to play until MOP hits, as of recently I find myself just logging onto WoW and sitting in Sw, talking to guildies and such, so I thought it was time for some change at least for the moment.

I have played a fair bit of Rift, its is very fun at times. You have 4 classes but each class has 3 souls, so this basically allows you to create any type of character you want, such as a healing mage or tanking rogue with a pet..

The downside is the leveling is such a boring grind, every quest is either "kill x of these guys" or "collect x of these things". Then at level 50 it;s similar to wow, you just run the dungeons over and over to earn marks then cash them in for gear.

At end game there is a lot of content, and one thing trion do right is keep the content coming (there is already a new island) The crafting system is quite nice and you can make gear equivalent (nearly) to the top tier raids.

Thing is, if you bored of wow, then you will probably feel the same about rift after a while, because apart from the actual 'rifts' there isn't much new to do.

I agree with a lot of this. I still enjoyed WoW but was bored of Blizzard so it's really my perfect game. Lots of steady content updates/bug fixes/balance adjustments made pretty much weekly rather than half yearly really were selling points for me.

Just one thing though and dont do what a lot of people seem to and compare end game WoW content to 1-6 Rift content. People say that levelling in Rift is boring but there's a massive variety of things to do compared to WoWs levelling, you just have to give it a chance and not instantly walk into the game with a negative "sigh this is just a wow clone" attitude

    Hope you enjoy it!

I got to like lvl 48? Its basically what a lot of people here are saying. Generic leveling (but I mean really how do u improve upon lvling?) every game is kill X of this and go to Y, didnt bother me at all. The Rifts are really cool and the zone boss Rifts give you a break from leveling.

The endgame looks pretty cool, and I am really impressed with Trion and the ammount of content they push out. I dont play anymore, but I follow the updates and people seem happy.

Main reason I quit is because my friends quit and I hate playing games w/o my friends lol. I know I could make new ones in Rift, but ive been playing MMO's with the same 10 people for like 4 years xD Old habits die hard.

You see, there are currently to many puppies and kittens on this world.
Every time a Goldseller spams his advertisement on the mmo-champion site, a puppy dies.

Got tired of Wow and tried Rift.
    Never looked back.

The leveling is kinda average but you have more choices like leveling through pvp, dungeons, closing rifts & doing various events.

Being max level is far superior to any other MMORGP.
You have dungeons, raids, warfronts(BG) and crafting like any other MMORPG.
You also have: Zone events, invasions, many different kinds of Rifts(PvP, raid, crafting & more), world events, active world pvp (since people actually leave the city), Instant Adventure(45+), artifact collecting, whole island for level 50s, adding new quality content faster than any other MMORPG, Planar Attunement system (you continue to gain experience after lvl 50 and can spend it on minor stats/skill upgrades), solo/duo dungeons and much much more.

It's not all about instanced raids/instanced pvp like some other MMORGPS.

This game really has everything you can ask for, it's sad to see some people hate on it, when they haven't been playing at maxlevel and can't understand the game at all. They treat it as Wow, thinking it's all about dungeons and instanced pvp. If you treat it as Wow then it will be just another wow for you.
I have been playing the game since release and I have been raiding like 5 times at max, rest of the time I have been doing stuff outside instances.
In other MMORGPs, if I didn't raid, I felt like there was no point to continue playing.

I've played all MMORPGS since Wow was released and this is the first one that I've actually enjoyed and subscribed to.

Of all the theme park MMOs, I believe Rift to be the highest quality of design available.

Structurally, it's very much like Warcraft. The goals are much same- raid and be awesome.

What sells Rift to me over Warcraft is a higher degree of developer commitment, a more intricate class system, sleeker interface w/o addons, modernity and a high difficulty curve in the endgame.

For example, 10 and 20 man raids are their own zones in Rift. It's not Firelands 10/25 Normal, Heroic- all the same raid with different modes. I find that to be lazy design in Warcraft and TOR. Trion would just make 4 separate raids equally offering progression.

I also find the allure and luster of raiding to be diminished in Warcraft when anyone can LFR queue or at the least run a "normal" mode and see that content. Whereas in Rift, you would not be able to LFR queue or run the easier version of Hammerknell. You have to earn it and that appeals to the sensibilities I developed coming from a Vanguard and Everquest background.

The hook, or gimmick if you will, of Rift is the granularity of it's design. Rift is highly rewarding play experience to those who enjoy the style of Warcraft & similar MMOs but desire deeper gameplay. There are a lot of casual activities in Rift to be sure. Yet where Rift shines above all other is in the glee-factor of working on a spec for 3 hours and getting an awesome 2 minute parse.

In the end, try the game. If it scratches that itch for an intricate Burning Crusade era Warcraft or Planes of Power Everquest then sub up.

Yep this^, give it a try, it's free after all! I personally am playing TOR until MOP comes out but it costs money to try!

Is no one going to mention the elephant in the room that is the poor design of Rift end game raiding? End game is rife with bugs and glitches, so if that's what your into, I suggest weathering the storm in wow, or playing to level 20 and not giving Tirion your hard earned cash.

Lol, rife with bugs is it? I will admit Hammerknell had some bugs in the first month... but that was six months ago. Don't come in here posting this rubbish or we'll report you en masse.

No reason not to try it with this, up to level 20 theres a fair bit you can do in game to experience it, you can level several chars up to 20 and see which you enjoy most, and then pay for the game afterwards. Can't grumble about a trial like that really.

I saw a bug last patch get 100 of WoW's top guilds banned. Tarien is right we have very little patience for it down here in our little forum.

You mean you played for five minutes and didn't try the endgame, or more likely would rather bash than make an intelligent enquiry or read the vast amount of information on this forum alone.

WoW and RIFT are nothing alike in the direction they are going. WoW is heading down the casual path so fast you'll be doing raid instances solo shortly. RIFT on the other hand is retaining some measure of challenge and variety by keeping raids difficult and 20 and 10man raids seperate. We should probably look at all the differences in the other content that Trion release every 6-7 weeks but I don't have a couple hours spare right now.

Only had 2 encounter breaking bugs in all of Rift raiding. They were fixed in less than a month.

I tried it and found it hard to get a good group for anything, i guess being in a guild and things would solve this though, but the graphics of the game were off-putting for me (not sure why just didn't feel right?)

Anyway gameplay was similar to wow just more clunky and the game had less features and things to do. As someone who has little time and commitments these days more than i had when i started wow i can't see myself playing rift all to much i just dont have the time needed.

If you want something more casual stick to wow, if you want something not so casual and like the graphics, community and raids then give it a try i guess?

Its all personal opinion anyway mate dont take anyone else's opinion as your own. its only yours the counts!
