You don't have to farm gear A to farm gear B to farm gear C to .... to farm gear ZY to farm gear ZZ... yes gear has stats but it is not tiered and gear of the same type and level will have the same stats regardless of if you get it farming dungeon rep or get it as a open world drop or buy it with karma or craft it with crafting (or redundantly say redundant things of redundantness). If its a 80 blue "of the phoenix" peice of gear from a dungeon its going to have the same stats as a 80 blue "of the pheonix" gear from crafting, if its a 80 purple "of the tank" peice from a random world drop its going to have the same stats as a 80 purple "of the tank" peice from the karma vendor. There is no "must get tier .5 80 blue gear to go get tier 1 80 purple gear to then get tier 2 80 purple gear to then get tier 3 80 purple gear"

Having stats on gear does not make it a treadmill, having a tier system where you must farm A to get B to get C to... makes it a treadmill.

Basically in GW2 gear comes naturally as you level and play the game. You won't have to grind dungeons to get that unique drop that will give you access to another dungeon where you will have to grind gear again. All gear is obtainable through various means, hell you can get PvE gear by participating in WvWvW. When you kill a player in a PvE setting, the player drops PvE gear, and again it's not some useless piece that you're gonna have to vendor, it's the same gear you'd have gotten by running a dungeon AND it will always be level appropriate : Let's say you're level 15 and doing WvW, you automatically get scaled to 80. Now let's say you kill a guy who is really level 80. He will drop level 15 gear Another thing to keep in mind if you like organized PvP : you don't have to grind honor/conquest/whatever sets to be competitive, everyone doing a Warzone is given the same gear. So no more "people in their PvE set ruining everything", only skill matters.

But does this still means that everyone at, for example, max level will look the same? Will all max level character of any specific class have the same gear as anyone else, or will everyone be unique?

You can re-skin your gear to look like any other piece of gear you can wear (basically think similar to transmog in WoW), and there is a great dye system so that even if you happen to come across someone with the same set of gear, there's little chance they will look exactly like you since you can alter the color scheme of your gear.

Oh yeah, good question No, you will not look like anyone else. There are transmutation stones (basically transmog), and a very rich dye system.

There's 400 unique individual dyes in the game, smaller armor like gloves have 1 dye channel, larger ones like chest pieces have 3 and sometimes even 4 dye channels. You can wear and transmutate any gear in the game that fits your weight class (light/medium/heavy). There's no set class armor in the game, if you're a Guardian you can wear any and all heavy armor in the game. You can take a transmutation stone and put any stats from a piece of gear onto whatever gear of the same item slot you want. Literally the only limit to how you can look is defined by the armor weight class. There's even entire unique armor and weapon sets for every dungeon and 32 different PvP armor sets for each armor weight class too.

As already mentioned dyes, but model wise no as well, crafted gear will have a certain theme to it model wise, and dungeon gear as well to show how you obtained the gear, the stats will be the same regardless of where/how you got it, but there will be different visual models. And as also already mentioned transmutation... which is not quite as customizable as say DCUO where you can choose to look like anything you have equipped in the past without having to keep a model of it to transmute into a new piece. Transmuting gear is about the same as the way Rift handled it of having costume slots on your character sheet to put the items into, which then wouldn't take up inventory while in the costume but would if you took it out, which has the same effect as transmuting gear but without actually destroying the original piece in the process so you could turn around and vendor it later.

There are a ton of cosmetic alternatives at every level, as well as a complete dye system
