Top - Start with a ward?

When i play Mordekaiser, i usually buy either 13 pots, or a ward and pots for the rest. :P

I think I've just started with ward top à few Times. Usually they don't gank early and enemies tend to push a lot, and I am pretty good at escaping

I always play Mundo top and never push, so my opponent is always near me and the tower and I'm safe from ganking. I kill my opponent a few times and I'm hardy enough to withstand ganks unless it's early game 5v1

Though some Lee Sin Jungles don't care about the tower and I'm careful around Blitzcranks and Nautilus (and to some extent Darius, Urgot, Amumu, and Jarvan IV)

13-Pots Mordekaiser is actually a known thing, and works amazingly well with him.

Anyway, starting with a ward might be a good idea if your champion is a natural pusher or doesn't have any reliable escapes. Otherwise, it's probably better to wait until you recall.
