While I don't mind that they're character-bound, I'm one of those guys who will do all the achievements, secondary tradeskills, and 100% zones with one character. So, one character of mine will have ~100 or so dyes, then I log into my other character and it will be disappointing to see that they only have 20 dyes.

All my issues with the dye system come from thinking too far forward.

As of BWE2, there was a 10% chance for a rare dye, 30% chance for an uncommon dye, and 60% chance for a common dye when using an unidentified dye. The mystic forge offered a 30% chance to increase your dye quality by one tier (unless the four dyes were already rare).

Assuming a player wanted a couple specific rare dyes and a few dyes (40) to go along with it; they'd most likely need ~600 dyes. If you want the majority (90%) of the collection and no specific dyes, you'll spend 1000+ dyes. They've stated that there will be a method to get a specific dye. I don't think players want to pay the equivalent of the current RNG price in order to get a specific rare (~256). If that system doesn't reflect the cost of collecting random dyes, there will be no point in collecting them. Players will just have tiny palettes and they may as well destroy 50%+ of the dyes from the get go.

I want the RNG system to have some amount of viability; yet that makes the cost of specific dyes way too high.

i like the account bound dye system, that way i can have a main that pretty much collects all of them and when and if i start differant alts i can make them look ever more differant, common and un-common dyes bing account bound and rares character bound sounds like a "fix" to the oh ive unlocked all the dyes and now i have nothing todo. but really with 400 differant ones (without buying them) how many do you think one could find in a 1-80 play span? certainly not all of them so making them account bound "could" make it easier for 1 person to collect them all and be able to actually enjoy some that they have put hard work into getting.

I don't resort to the amazingly overused and groundless "but you said 2 years ago that they were account-bound zomg y u change it!!" and I'm not someone who wants the incentives gone completely either. I just want them to change something, and I don't really care what it is. Let us sell/trade them, let us buy specific colors, let us Mystic Forge them for specific colors instead of random ones, let us only obtain ones we don't currently own, or make them account-wide. Honestly, any one thing in that list would be enough for me to be content. What I really want - but don't expect - is for them to be account-bound so the completionist in me will actually find it worthwhile to collect all of them, even if I won't use 90% of them. Right now it's "meh, another dye" and I will never in a million years spend real money to get a random assortment of dyes that I likely won't need/use. The incentives just aren't there, being account-wide would make collecting them far more meaningful.
I can mostly agree with this, but I also didn't play around with the Mystic Forge, so I'm not sure if that particular item would satisfy me. :P

From what I've heard, what they're planning on for the Mystic Forge is reminiscent of mixing together dyes to get a specific color in GW1.

I actually don't mind if they're account-bound or not. It'll be a bit annoying when I switch to a different character and think "Crap, I want to use that other color on my other character!" but at least suddenly I have a specific use for repeats for a while. I found plenty of random dye seeds while out exploring and doing stuff.

I hope you haven't forgotten my role in this little story. I'm the leading man. You know what they say about the leading man? He never dies.

I usually play my "main" about 90% of my time ... and the issue I have is that collecting dyes isn't exactly fun, so having to do it on alts, for me, is useless. I don't see it as a form of progression, but rather as busy work. HOWEVER, I understand it is potential source of revenue for Anet -- and they gotta make that money somehow, so it doesn't bother me. My alts just won't have as many coloring options. I don't, however, buy their reasoning -- it is not character progression or at least not an interesting form of it.

With that said, I don't really care ... the standard dyes are enough for me

Eh. When playing the BWE, I didn't see any reason to try to collect dyes. Sure, I want to get tons of dyes and have plenty of options - I would love to collect them all. But on most characters, I just went with a color palette that appealed to me out of what I had, and moved on. Sometimes I'd change it up, but then I'd still move on. I might grouse about not having a specific shade of a color, but it's not like it broke my will to play or anything.

well when you have all 400 dyes with your main you still get more dyes from loot. Send these to your alts and your problem is solved. I'm sure you have tons of stacks while you get to 80, so these can be combined into new ones too.

I must admit that, since I will focus on just one character, it will not make any difference if it's account or character bound. But if I had to chose, I would agree with the third option (compromise about common and rare dyes).

I have mixed feelings. I'm sure I'm gonna collect all the dyes within a few months and then there will be no point in collecting the unidentified dyes if they are account bound, so that's where character bound dyes look nice. I honestly wouldn't mind either way if they changed it or left it how it is.

I don't know much about the dye system, but I voted for the third option, as it sounds fair to me.
