So what will you be doing on the 20th December 2012?

Unless you live under a rock, then you know the whole theory about the Mayan's calender ending on the 21st December 2012 *before the new one starts* an so it's hyped up that the end of the world could occur.
Not like we haven't heard this before, but eh.
Now I wasn't old enough to pay attention to the 2000's end of technology/world theory, and I didn't care much for the 06/06/06, or the hydron collider end of world theories. So I'm not sure how hyped it is compared to these.

    So I ask;
What will you be doing on the night of the 20th December?
Regular night of gaming, or actually going out and drinking with mates, or whatever you do?

I'm off to a huge party in a close town which has over 400 people going to it at the current time. Keen to drink my possible end of existence away with my friends and heaps of randoms.

This isn't a thread about me believing the world ending, just a fun thing
We stopped searching for monsters under our beds when we realized that they were inside us.

Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

\It's that ghost thing from Nightmare Before Christmas. I'll NEVER forget it :3

Edit: OT. Wasn't there something buzzing around Facebook at how the Mayan calendar never accounted for leap years? Apparently we should be in like.. 2013 or 2014?

Whatever I was doing on December 19, probably. Not caring about this theory.

It was actually said that if the Mayan Calender was true, it would have happened several hundreds of years ago cause of leap year.

Here is a short video to explain why that's not true. But to give a brief explanation. The Mayan calendar system is just counting days, it exists completely separately from our calendar system.

    On topic:
I've got no special plans for that day. I'll be doing whatever I would be doing normally (probably on MMO-C or playing a game)

Will probably do nothing special because there is nothing special about it. I would even forget about all that stuff if it wouldn't constantly keep poping up the closer we get to the date.

I mean, come on. Dates are dates, they are meant as a way to count time and refer to certain times. All this stuff with "special" dates like 06/06/06 is merely superstition, as well as set-in-stone event dates like christmas or birthdays. They may be periodic in a way I agree, but only according to some guy you don't even know who made the stuff up by himself. Hell we even need to correct every few years so the whole system keeps making sense. How can one take this serious at all?

And for that "end of the world" date. Imagine the only reason why this Mayan calendar ends on 12/20/12 is that the guy who did it was too groggy that night and called it. The next day he wakes up and finds it futile to continue since he had already planned millennia into the future, a time to which his kind probably won't even live to see. Then decades later someone else finds it rather dubious to end there and decides to continue the first guys work, but eventually he comes to close by another date as well, and so on, and so on.

You see there's not even the need for something mystical to explain such things, and there's sure as hell nothing related to "the end of the world" in it. It's all in our imagination, because we want something to happen, because we want certain dates to be special.

Didn't they find another calendar that continued where the end of everything whatever said it stopped.

Nothing out of the ordinary. This whole Mayan calender thing has been debunked for quite some time. No doubt the media blow it out of proportion though.

Thats the same calendar. It never says anything stops or ends at all, it's just the tin-hat brigade misreading it.

The Meso-american Long Count, which is what the Mayan calendar is, devides it's 'ages' up into units of 20. The 21st Dec 2012 is simply the date when we complete the current age cycle (Ka'Tun) and move into the new cycle of 20 Bak'Tun's.

The calendar then happily continues and the moves into the next age (Pictun) on 13th October 4772. In fact, the calendar has assigned units for another 4 ages after this which will keep the calender going for roughly another 63 millions years

I'll be worrying about the world ending on the 31st December - when the Julian Calendar ends.

Its just the end of their Baktun long count calender. If their civilisation lasted, they would of calculated another long count calender long before 21/12/2012. No where in mayan culture describes an end time, apart from their usual cultural one, but its something that doesn't dominate their culture, unlike ours

SIDE NOTE: Mayan creation myth speaks of a god that creates three worlds, however only one is deemed fit for mankind. Others die/fade out. Current geological surveys of Mars and Venus has given indications that they where very much like earth a long time ago. with a temperate climate, and oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere. Mars's core cooled down and lost its atmosphere due to the small size of the planet and Venus overheated with greenhouse gases.

One thing does happen on that date is that our solar system/sun/combination (I forget which) will be in perfect galactic allignment, and then proceed either to the upper or lower part of the galactic hemisphere (I forget which, again). However this is a clockwork action that happens every so often. What is fasinating is that this 'galactic allignment' happens the end of their baktun calender. Mayans are well known astronomers and astrologists, and I find it compelling that their end of the long count calender happens to coincide with this galactic allignment. However, as a scientist myself, I find it hard to put scientfic creedence into astrology, however my times in research and study has led me to believe that astrology has very coincidential observations. And things do work like clockwork in the universe (only account for changes that can be observed in a timeframe of millions of years, not in the small amount of time we observe/have observed).

Sorry, completely off topic. However I am interested in this, some of what I said is opinion based on observations and fact. I'm sorry I haven't cited, i'm really hung over. Can do upon request.

Anyway, baaack to topic. Most likely Christmas shopping, knee deep in studying, and spending the day like any other friday!
