GPU rendering makes it possible to use your graphics card for rendering, instead of the CPU. This can speed up rendering, because modern GPU's are quite designed to do a lot of number crunching. It's a choice, use the CPU or the GPU (if supported). Try both, see which is quicker.

Never made/rendered anything in Blender, but I never had any problems with speed of rendering things in Sony Vegas (video footage) with my CPU, but then, my computer is half decent.
