"Hardheaded Socialism Makes Canada Richer than US"

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...than-u-s-.html

For the first time ever, the average net worth of a Canadian household is higher than the average net worth of a US household.

    Canada: $363,202
    US: $319,970

Their unemployment rate has also dropped to 7.2% while it remains stagnant in the US at 8.2%.

This can be attributed to a number of factors including but not limited to: financial regulation, socialist-leaning policies, the disallowance of banks to merge, "brutal" cuts to social programs, cutting corporate taxes, and of course, an abundance of natural resources.

It seems like Canada has taken ideas that both Democrats and Republicans like, though not mutually, and implemented them to great success.

So what can the US learn from Canada?

What works for a country of roughly 34million people wont necessarily work for a country of 310million...

Thread title is the title of the article linked.

And you missed a word. Hardheaded. Read the article. It clearly states that Canadas success is not just a result of their socialist leaning policies but also fiscal conservatism.

Yeah I was like wtf when I read that one. Anyways blame it on Oil sands and most of a families net worth being tied into their home, so housing market goes to shit and TADA the Canucks are "richer" now.

I would live in Canada in a heartbeat. Legal weed + everyone is nice as shit. Cold weather sucks, but global warming is taking care of that. If Romney gets elected I had considered moving up there since he will have us at war with Iran, Syria, Russia, and China within a year.

    Again; two definitions of "socialism".

There's political socialism, which is concerned with the welfare of the citizens. Any country that has nationalized health care, unemployment programs, etc is "socialist" by this definition, including the US.

There's also economic socialism, which is where workers own the means of production. This means things like co-ops and factories owned by the unionized workers. If you want a simple distinction to make; credit unions are socialist, banks are capitalist.

If you're thinking of anything other than the above two, you're not talking about "socialism". If you're thinking of authoritarian governments, or communist nations, or anything along those lines, you need to stop drinking the kool-aid and learn what words mean.

Also, more on-topic, you forgot to mention that we also have significantly less national debt, per capita.

Canada is rich because of wood and metal.

The same logic explains why Australia (metal) and Middle Eastern countries (oil) are rich.

US doesn't farm its own natural resources anymore (at large scale).

Socialism and Communism are not the same thing. Let's just throw that out there before people start equating the two with one another.

What's so bad in being socialist that so many people jump? It's not communism. It's just that the state takes more care of people and tries to balance incomes more. So when a country has a healthcare system payed by everyone as a tax, that's socialism. When a country has a system where everyone pays their own healthcare alone, and if you don't have money you die, that's not socialism. Even your dear USA has socialist measures, some countries have more though.

Canada is a socialist country? must have missed the memo on that. Just because a country has some government run programs such as health care, etc it doesn't make a country socialist. By those standards you could label the whole western world (excluding the USA) as socialist...

What can the USA learn from Canada? Same thing it can learn from most countries; having a political system that isn't completely polarized. The USA really needs a third major political party.

Because they farm the resources of others? It doesn't change they're filled with resources. USA is a rich country, rich as hell. Don't get me that "oh, poor USA, we don't farm our resources anymore like those evil Canadians and others, and now they're more rich then us!"

I wasn't having a dig at you, the author of that article needs a dictionary. Canada's policies aren't socialist, they are a mix of centre-right amd centre-left. the author could just have easily said 'hardheaded conservatism'.

Hell, even a left-wing party would be an interesting change.

And before anyone says "Democrats", the Democrats have been moderately right-wing for decades, on the global scale. "Slightly less right-wing" is not the same as "left-wing".
