What is a dota? It sounds like something horribly unbalanced, with an unforgiving learning curve with the least closed closed beta in the history of closed betas.

Unforgiving learning curve I agree to in part. If you play with/against people that has played about as much as you, then you should be fine. While there's less to learn as you get better there's always something to learn or find. That it took 6 months (or whatever it was) after it was released for Treant Protector to get broken is proof of that.

MAFIA GAME RELATED ANSWER - Out of 10 completed games Ely has won 3 games for a 30% win rate. He has been lynched 4 times with 2 of those times being Town. Ely has been Scum 3 times (well... 4 if you count the time he was a Surgeon) for a Scum rate of 30%, and has survived to the end of a game only twice (but has never been end gamed) for a survival rate of 20%. Ely has a consecutive Town streak of 4 (games 27-30, including Surgeon in this case), and a consecutive Scum streak of 2 (games 24 and then 26). His best role is Jack (1) with 100% win. His worst roles are Mafia (2), Investigator (1) and SK (1) with 100% lose rates. Special mention goes to Ely being a VT (4) with a 75% lose rate. When Ely is Mafia, the Mafia always loses.
