Think about it for a second.

They want somebody who knows at least enough about gaming to be able to sell games, that seems like a very reasonable way to tell if somebody knows about the product they will be selling.

Its GAMESTOP, they want people who know what they are selling, non-gamers in game stores are a pain for other workers and the customer.

I had a friend who had a friend working in there, so I had to see it, You don't have to be a fanboy who knows about every single console game ever released, but at least know enough to quickly find the most popular titles.

I spend a lot of time on gaming sites. I've worked there before. I have time, I can do the research.

I told him all this. I also told him the newer games that I've bought when he asked. he asked me, SPECIFICALLY, what games I bought AT GAMESTOP after that. It's not a "what do you know about games". It's more like they want more people that can be persuaded to buy shit from a dying company.

It's kind of like me being a moderator here. I say whatever I want in IRC to the other mods, but here in the forum I make sure to follow the rules as one would expect. If I go into an interview, I should not be expected to lie for a job, because behind closed doors, I can feel like I can be myself. The lying can begin when I get the job.
