The original was very tightly edited, flowed well and was very well done if it weren't for the subpar acting. Makes sense when you factor in that Joel Cohen edited the film.

I'll keep an open mind, but I'm not expecting anything spectacular. Don't judge a film by its trailer, though: stupid trailer - turns out it's a slow-churning, meditative "art house" film

I think you have this movie confused with something else. I haven't read any reviews that have said its 'trying' to be funny.

I'm not sure what you saw but I don't see "all kinds of corny jokes and sexist comments". While I might disagree with the need for an Evil Dead remake, it does NOT look like it's meant to be humorous.

I just recently rented the original Evil Dead on Netflix...sort of to pay homage to the original before seeing the remake.

Honestly, I wasn't that impressed. For its time (1979 I think?), it must have been truly ground-breaking in the sense of gore. I will acknowledge that aspect, but it just didn't grab me (probably because I've seen WAY more intense movies). I hope the remake is scarier, though. I was laughing through the entire original Evil Dead.

the fact that the original doesn't hold up is why I'm more forgiving of them making a remake than I usually am with remakes, its an opportunity for a new audience to have the same experience as the people who saw Evil Dead 30 years ago, at least I hope it turns out that way

Well that's kind of the point now. In terms of how the story flows, execution of scenes and camera choices it's a fantastic directorial/editorial film. The gore though, that's for laughing. It's a fun movie and it defined a genre. If the remake can actually be scare while maintaining the same level of direction and editing, it'll be great.

This llama knows what he's talking about. The way the monster-viewpoint camera shots are done was so far ahead of its time, it was ridiculous. With some serious acting and better use of the concept, it should be fantastic. Sam Raimi also gave it his approval, which is nice to know.

It's gotten rave reviews. I'm seeing it this Friday.

It looks legitimately creepy. And I rarely find movies nor games unsettling.

While I sincerely hate Hollywood and it's boner for doing remakes of things that were already good and having zero new thinking as to go so far as to rip of childrens books for their new movies whenever they can't remake one, I think this movie might turn out alright.

That's the point though, it's NOT Evil Dead. It's a remake. Nothing, NOTHING, will be as good as the original.

I'm excited, I loved the Evil Dead series, but you all have a different viewpoint from what I've had since watching the originals. The Original Evil Dead was a failure, it was made as a horror but failed to fright and thus became a slight comedy. Sam Raimi took the queue and 'remade' Evil Dead with Evil Dead 2, going for full blown comedy. Then it just shot for the moon with Army of Darkness but I don't think anyone can say that Evil Dead was good. It was also a student film (though some student films are amazing, ie. The Cube) so you can't expect much, though it does have a cult following but mostly for the humour of the series rather than any horror.

I'm excited to see Evil Dead redone and made correctly, with an actual horror element. Can't wait to see it.

(Now to find a way to talk my girlfriend into going to it, she still cringes while thinking about that scene in the trailer with the razor and tongue. She's not into horrors.)

Why would nothing be as good as the original? Would you say Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is unambiguously worse than Bob Dylan's original song?

I think it's a little rash to make strong claims one way or the other about the film right now.

After reading the reviews I'm certainly interested. Most critics tend to agree it lives up to the homage it's making, which is good enough to justify the theater price for me.

If you are a fan of the original be sure to stick around after the credits roll!

I've got a feeling that a lot of critics are going to review this in a very retroactive manner: Most critics who praise Evil Dead to the rafters only did so in the DVD re-release period, as the film got quite heavily panned originally, but after it was concluded it was a cult classic, it suddenly got rave reviews from the same sources. This makes me think that the remake will be reviewed from the viewpoint of a revision of the bible - with great rage and the belief that the original was perfect in every possible way.

I'll have to check it out myself, without reading too much into any source's opinions on it.
