Your favorite Classic Japanese RPG games? (PS1, SNES, GBA, etc)

    Howdy folks.

So lately I have been wanting to play through some of my old favorite PlayStation 1 J-RPG games, like Chrono Cross, Xenogears etc. And since I've recently started streaming I would like to have a list of games to play that I've forgotten or haven't played yet.

So, I ask of you this: What are some of your favorite Japanese RPG games?

The 2nd and 3rd games of Enix' Soul Blazer "Trilogy" - Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.

They are beyond amazing. The story is just... I can't even put words to it.

For all that is fucking holy, play them.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check those out. Don't think I have ever heard of these two titles before, and that makes me sad after looking at the pages. Maybe I'll play one of these first!

Great list, thanks! I've only played about a quarter of them. They're all amazing games. I think Breath of Fire is my favorite out of these from those that I've played more than just a few hours.
I stream raid shenanigans, retro games and general silliness over at twitch.tv/kanthos. 3+ days, 5+ hours every week.

Personally, my favourite rpgs have been

Final Fantasy (insert numbers here) - Simply going with the popular flow but didn't find it THAT great
Phantasy star 1,2,3 and 4 -simply great imo, a pretty good story, challenging enough from what I recall and pretty interesting characters and plot twists( the latter mostly on PS4)
Shining Force 1 and 2(genesis) and shining force gaiden 1,2 and final conflict (game gear) - these ones are simply amazing tactical rpgs with a somewhat cheesy but interesting story and some pretty great characters, but it suffers from the mute hero syndrome. I sadly never got my hand on shining fore 3 for dreamcast

Fire emblem series- these are simply amazing, most of the games in the series are really cchallenging and it has the added difficulty that one you lose a character in a battle, he's gone for good with no way to revive him and a limited number of characters in a way so you could end up with just your hero(es) in the final battle. I like how it stands out from other tactical RPGs in its newer releases with systems such as the weapon triangle (not that great), different promotion possibilities and the differing character paths (IE Hector story mode in FE7 or Ephraim's route in FE8)

I guess I'm a tactical rpg fanboy, but oh well :P

to many to name one as a favorite.

Hard to name a single favorite one, but my very first JRPG was Shining in the Darkness (for Genesis - analogue of D&D Eye of the Beholder back in time), and it quickly made me to fall in love with Japanese approach to these genre. Oh and Phantasy Star II with it's elaborated dungeons. Couldn't touch a single D&D game after those.

Does metal gear solid (PS) count? It had the japanese style controls (which honestly I prefer). I guess it's not an rpg but it has the best story of any game I've ever played and you get super attatched to characters even after meeting them for the first time.

You know, I've played both Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia to death, fantastic games... but I never heard of Terranigma! Now I feel slightly ashamed

    Good God man (or woman)!

    Play it!

Should be mentioned that I also endorse any mention of Fire Emblem games, aswell as Golden Sun games. Especially the latter. The three Golden Sun games are rich in story AND have really good gameplay to boot.
