Perhaps he was more than your "normal person" who played wow, perhaps he helped people and touched more than a few hearts on wow. Perhaps blizzard recognized his work with add-ons and his general good character within the wow community. Perhaps he was the type of person that blizzard would like to have associated with their game.

Okay, if you could name a few people who haven't been memorialized in WoW that died, that'd be great.

Secondly, when the community speaks up about a player, their FRIEND, who has passed away, Blizzard notices.

What, you think they simply google everyday "People who have died today thatplayed WoW".

And what issue is it if not a lot of the people in this thread know the guy?

It shows at least we have character, and we're remembering someone who was a part of our community, even if we didn't know who he was.

We all play this game together, and as such even if we all don't get along, we're still a community.

Props on Blizzard for this. Only other game company I know that has done this is Gearbox. A dedicated Borderlands player died due to cancer before Borderlands 2 came out. A bunch of his friends and fellow gamers started a thread on their forums, and that person has been immortalized in Borderlands 2 as an NPC that has a chance to spawn in Sanctuary, and will give you a random blue or purple weapon when you find him.

These are the kinds of things that make the few companies rise above the majority.

This is why it's I believe Blizzard devs have the best jobs in the world. They can give tribute to whoever the fuck they want without worrying about internet nobodies. They don't give a shit about someone who thinks that people should know who Odlaw is before they recognize a good gesture. Grow up! The "bandwagon jumpers" think its a nice thing because its nice. There does not need to be another reason.

I respectfully disagree. He is a guy immortalized in a game played by 10 million people. You got anything like that to your name? Or anything else at all? You obviously have pretty high standards for who should get a mention from Blizzard, I just want to know where they come from.

Actually, Activision (or maybe the studio that developed the game) did that kind of a thing in Call of Duty: MW3 where they have hidden places where they had teddy bears holding pistols. It was a remembrance for the daughter of an employee who died after a long illness.
