Tennant played an incredibly human Doctor, and the whole thing with Rose was 2/3 of his popularity.
Smith and Eccleston both bring the aloofness, the separation of the Doctor to life. Yes, the Doctor was often close with his companions, but Tennant's Doctor went farther than the others. I like Smith's personality better, but Tennant had some good scenes and a lot of good lines, so they are equal. Eccleston really steals the show for me because he plays the wounded timelord so well, and it's his interactions with Rose that really set the foundation for Tennant's relative humanity and the whole deal with Rose.
