This actually exists or is it CSI:Miami stuff? Does it even work when the phone is turned off?

It exists. You can also have any picture that gets taken uploaded to the internet. They released a picture of some girl a while back asking the public if anyone knew her as they think she stole the guys phone. Haven't heard the outcome of that case. All kinds of security apps and talk to your service provider for tips.

Why didn't you just take your jacket off NEXT to the guy instead of leaving it by the lake?

Anyhoo, people are evil, always have been, always will. Shit like this is the reason why I don't help people or trust anyone anymore!

I know how you feel though, I've had a good amount of stuff stolen from me over the years.. Ipod mini, digital camera, debit card, bus passes. I've even had really stupid things such as subway cards with no money left in them, school textbooks (from work!!!!), multivitamins, water bottles, deodorant, I've even had a box of condoms stolen from me once >_> People are just plain fucking wacko.

First of all, my understanding was that the man actually fell into he lake. What sane individual would risk hypothermia for MAYBE a couple bills in a guy's wallet? Second of all, how on earth would these two random people know the OP well enough to know that he would try to help or save this man? Plenty of people in these comments are saying they would have just walked away. Also, how would they know that the article in question that he might have to remove contained any valuables in it anyway? Either these are two master thieves stealing simple wallets, or you watch way too many movies and don't know what "real life" actually is anymore.
    I like anime and stuff.

Yesterday I found a wallet and a cellphone in what looked to be an abandoned jacket. No ca$h, and the phone was shit, so I threw it out in the nearest bin. FML

On a serious note, sucks2bu However some people are great!
ME for example, I recently found an iPhone on a parking lot, and took it with me home, where I phoned "grandmother". When the phone was delivered back, they gave dinner to me and my gf.

I am an Android user and as far as Android goes yes they do exist (and they probably exist on other platforms not sure though).

E.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result This app avast can turn on/off, delete and track your device using GPS by installing a hidden app inside the root of your device (requires root).

    Another one https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result

"Application Features~ Find phone by making it ring/vibrate
~ Find phone using GPS location
    ~ Text your attention word
~ Control from Commander at WheresMyDroid.com
~ Passcode protection to prevent unauthorized app changes
~ Notification of changed SIM card or phone number
~ Stealth Mode hides incoming text with attention word
~ White/Black list to control who can use the app via text
    ~ No battery drain

    Extra Features In Pro
~ Take pictures with the devices camera
    ~ Remotely lock device
    ~ Remotely wipe SD card
    ~ Remotely wipe phone data
~ Use a landline to activate the app
~ Customizable ringtone when lost (Pro or with registration)"

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result

Most of them either use SMS as means of communicating with the device and issuing orders, website based interface, or root with varying degrees of control.

This seems to always happen when you attempt to do something good. So that is why I never help people. Nothing good ever comes out of it for myself.

Thats usually not the point in helping people you know ?
Sucks that some random lowlife was nearby but dont let it get your faith in humanity down

Think positive, now you can look down on people and actually be right !

Wow thats one fucked up mindset, never help people because only bad happens to you because of that ? Who tells that crap ?

If everyone would think like this, I guess we can abandon humanity forever and everyone dies in a cave for himself.
Help people and you won't lose damn anything because the people are grateful you helped another human being.

The OP had bad luck, hopefully you get your stuff back.

People today abandon everyone because of an minority of assholes that take advantage of the helping person, thats fuckin sad and depressing.

Cancel the credit card and phone pronto so they don't go too far with it. I wouldn't count on the police to do much but you may want to do some detective work. Ask around in the park if anyone saw anything or if there has been other incidents. They also may have left their footprints which you try following. I would also do some research on the guy that was in the lake to see if his phone # and address are legit. You may also want to see if any nearby stores have cameras that might have caught anything. All of them are longshots but you never know.

If it was a scam it was well played. You really have to keep your wits about you. This is my video. Shows a guy on a major highway backing into a guy. Thankfully it was videotaped and the scammer was charged:

Reminds me of the guy who lived down the street from us who would back out of his driveway in front of traffic, since in Canada if you rear end someone it's your fault. I think he did it 4 or 5 times before the police were able to do anything.

I also once stopped to offer a young woman a ride on a really cold night, around -25 Celcius. I drove her home, and the next day I woke up to find my tyres slashed, windows and headlights smashed and some rather large dents in my truck. Apparently her boyfriend was the really jealous type, though it makes me wonder why he was not there to drive her yet had the time to do 3.5k in damages to my vehicle.

Once saw an old woman slip on the ice, I helped her up and called the ambulance. Some fucker stole my bike in front of my eyes and kicked me in the chest.

    Yeah, fuck people.

Edit: 1 month later I saw my bike parked in front of the mall. I recognized it as I had those "testicle protector" thingies attached to the steering wheel. I decided to wait a bit, and guess who I saw come out after some minutes. He saw me and ran, took my bike back and everything worked out.

    Let me explain briefly.

I was walking around the park when I saw someone falling into a frozen lake. I immediately ran towards him and helped him out, but I had my very big and impractical winter jacket on, so I threw it on the snow next to the lake in order to have free movement. Inside my jacket were my wallet and my phone.

Now, I wasn't alone. Right after me 5 other people came as well and helped us out, too. Nothing serious happened, the guy was totally okay... but when I came back to get my jacket I noticed that my phone and my wallet were missing.

I mean, for real? I go and try to fucking save someone down there and whoever was responsible for this though it would be a good idea to steal my stuff?

Fuck society. I'm really pissed off right now... what do people like that think? Do they even think or do they just act out of pure evil?

Best of it, nobody saw anything. At least nobody wanted to say anything. I reported it to the police which I called directly to the scene, but nobody wanted really to wait there so I ended up being alone with one other guy... even the guy from the lake got escorted by the paramedics. He said he's sorry but he couldn't help me since he didn't see anything. But he gave me his contact details just to make sure.

Police said that they realistically can't do anything about it since I didn't get the personal information from everyone who was there... like that's the first thing I think of after all of that crap.

    Best.day.ever.

Are you sure your wallet didn't fall out of your jacket?

I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you OP but you can't judge society by an act of one stupid individual. Look on the bright side, you saved a life and those people will forever be grateful to you and your valuables can be replaced.
No offense intended, but it seems like you're an entitled individual if you really think everything is replaceable. For many individuals, they live on tight budgets. It's not exactly a reality to replace a $200+ cell phone, which he would have to do since he's presumably still under contract and therefore not eligible for a free phone, as well as his wallet and all it's contents. If he has credit cards in there too and they get used, he's responsible to prove it they were stolen, again something near impossible to do.

Being a decent person in today's society comes with extreme risk. Not only are there scummy people out there more than eager to steal your stuff, but there are also plenty of victims out there willing to sue you for saving them, but hurting them. It's also not uncommon for those individuals to win their cases.

Being the hero is just not worth it. Don't get me wrong, I would have done the same as the OP, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't still be as pissed and cynical as he is now as a result.

Those do nothing when the phone is off. After that it goes to a random kiosk to be sold.

Yeah, the inside zipper was open, and I am 100% sure I closed it. Anyway, my phone is gone as well... how high is the chance to lose both items at once?

I have had things like this happen to me when I was a kid... everyone dropped his jacket on the floor somewhere to go and play street football. When I came back, my jacket was gone. I was younger than 14 when it happened for the last time, though.

This happened a few times which made me almost paranoid about leaving things around without supervision.

I left my jacket uphill maybe 10 meters away, but my focus was completely on the guy in the lake. I just didn't think that someone would abuse such a situation...

Oh well, back to polyphonic ringtones.

should have asked one of the people there to lend there phone and ring your phone.
Maybe you would have got lucky and the thief not turned it off.
