Moving Program files + user files to HDD

Hi, just bought my new computer with a 120gb ssd + 1TB hdd. The problem I'm having is that my downloads + programs etc. are being downloaded to my ssd, which makes the HDD utterly useless.

I'd like to simply have my most important programs + OS on my ssd, and let everything else store up on my HDD. Now, is there an easy way to do this, without having to enter regedit?

    Thanks in advance.

That's the thing... HDD's are utterly useless these days unless you keep terabytes of midget porn stashed there. All music and movies are streamed now and the need for storage space at home has dropped to rock bottom.

You can set download directory in all web browsers and torrent clients to whatever you like from those programs directly without any registry tweaks, that should fix the most obvious problem. For installing programs you can choose to do custom installation and set the path manually off from c: drive but it's not really recommended unless you're totally out of space on the SSD.

Everything related to the OS should stick to the C drive (The SSD)

Really the only thing that should be relegated to the HDD is movies/music/pictures.

And even then, you either need to A) remove some crap, uninstall games you dont play anymore, or B) Get a bigger SSD

    Quite glad I got a 256.

That's the problem. I do not want to do it manually. I'd like this to happen automaticly.

You need to do it ONCE for each program you're using. Or are you in habit of uninstalling and reinstalling web browsers weekly?

For example in my case it's enough to redirect Firefox and uTorrent to download off the C drive, it's two programs you set manually and that's it. I have downloads currently set to my older smaller SSD so that the HDDs can be turned off by power saving profiles most of the time.

I've gone from 60GB to 120GB to current 250GB... And it seems like the 250 is perfect size. About 2/3 of it used after half year and pretty much everything I need on weekly basis is there.

im finding it fun that "downloading" is useless because of streaming........
how else is one supposed to watch movies/series on the go it's not like streaming with my crappy 3g network from my phone is gonna work for that.....
for music i'd say the same screw those streaming services i want my physical files to be my own and not tied to programs like itunes/spotify and alike is that too much to ask nowadays?

most download clients can be setup to download to the hdd usually just a matter of changing the storage directory when installing.
im still installing most small programs to my ssd and it's only half full also a 120gb one. However if i'd install all my downloads on a ssd i'd really need some more ssd's because i've got +- 2TB of storage of games/movies/series/music.

I got a revelation some years ago which was the point when I stopped caring about mp3's and avi's piling on my own HDD or burned CDs/DVDs. If you want something physical you own, buy a CD from a store. Your files bought or ripped aren't any better or more real than the streamed ones.

Just know that hacking registry to change program files location is begging for troubles.

you can just remap what folders windows 7 includes in it's libraries and then program where things save like you mentioned. no registry hacking needed and accomplishes what he wants (not storing personal files on the ssd)

This is where your share your findings, that part of what the boards are for even if you don't agree with the rest of posters input.

Hehe, I was trying to do that. Yet the forum didn't allow me to post links. Said I hadn't posted enough posts yet. Made no sense to me, so I just let it go.

I see, well I believe you need 10 replies before you can post links. You're one away from that As long as you got what you wanted that's all that matters I guess.
