A button to create items eh.
I had almost the same idea, but then for hunter pets. Where if you tamed a pet from a family, you'd unlock that skin instead of getting the pet. So instead of me having 10 cats in my stable, I would have 1 with 10 skins to choose from. Decided it wasn't such a good idea after all, because pets. Can see it working for tabards though.

I think the key is that the items are all stock items, so it doesn't have to remember anything except an ID number and that you own it.
