I too need to get out there and read the WoT books.
I'm sadded now though. I though 2014 was a tentative release date for the Winds of Winter.
As well as the Philip Pullman books, I would also recommend Robin Hobbs' books. On the timeline, it starts with the Farseer trilogy. Then goes to another land and culture (but in the same world) with the Liveship Trader trilogy, then returns to the lands of the first trilogy with the Tawny Man trilogy. The events of the final tetralogy (the Rain Wilds Chronicles) runs concurrently to the third trilogy. I'm currently re-reading through them now.
What else.... Even if you've seen the movie get the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon) books. Vastly superior to the movie.

The Eragon books are awesome. That have the superior Arya in them.
Totally obvious it'd be her at the end with the gween dwagon too.
Ive heard nothing but bad things about eragon the movie because the books were so good
So many things to add so little cash

The movie wasn't terrible if you watched it without having read the book.

I download ebooks to my kindle rather than going and buying them, though eventually I'll fill a nice big bookshelf with the books people buy me I guess.
