    Rapid Weight Loss

Something popped into my head the other night as I flipping by the channels and came across one of those weight loss shows. From everything Ive heard, it is unhealthy to lose more than 2 to 3 pounds per week. If that is true, then why do the doctors on weight loss TV shows such as Biggest Loser and Extreme Makeover weight Loss Edition, allow the contestants to lose 10 to 20 pounds per week when they start and as they get skinnier, they lose less but still over 5 pounds per week. In my opinion this is a bad idea even if they are considered healthy. Losing weight that fast doesnt give time for the skin to shrink so they end of up with 40 pounds of loose skin.

Same reason as they have other reality shows.
People watch it. Several of those shows isn't healthy. Specially the japanese shows are rather fucked up.

I guess it's still better to lose much weight in a short time, than staying fat for the rest of your life though. The result is just not as pretty.
You can get the skin cut of(or how you say that) surgically so there's ways around it.
But it us better overall to lose it slowly due to proper habits, instead of some kind of bootcamp, but honestly. Who cares about people in those shows? :P
Everyone has so much to say
They talk talk talk their lives away

I think that the content or the quality of shows like these is not worth discussing.
It's just straight terrible, they do a lot what I find borderline when it comes to being legal or tasteful.
I hate the fact that they still find an audience for that...

From experience it is not the amount of weight you loose that determines if it is to much or not, but the % of your body fat that you loose. For example someone who weights 150 pounds would not be healthy loosing 10 pounds in a week. However it would be fine for someone who weights say 350 pounds to loose 10. But that's just from random reading probably a better answer then that.

Thats probably true, but still if you lose weight too fast you get extra skin which is hard to keep clean and gets in the way ofo doing things. I think they should slow down

Biggest Loser Australia just ended here like 2 days ago, i've watched all 8 seasons of it when it's been on because I find it interesting how they look from week 1 til finale, but it is ok to go on diets like that for short periods of time and the only ones with loose skin are the really old people you see on the shows which is hardly any, they eat 1000 calories max a day and exercise 5-6 hours a day or more, various challenges etc that they have too.

I don't see anything wrong with it as it's not just them losing weight they learn how to eat healthy and change their life not just a temporary weight loss.

Just no. They have specialists, nutritionists and all kinds of medical people making sure they DO eat. Anyone working out that much knows that you have to eat enough to keep going. 1k calories is ridiculous.

Actually barely anyone on those shows keeps the weight off. They all tend to go back to thier starting weight. (or worse) The go from having a dedicated diet and trainer with them everyday pushing them to having nothing and going back to their 9-5's. It's a stupid show that makes exercise look like a complete fucking misery. Lets face it if you had spent 8 weeks with skinny people yelling at you with the word loser on your tshirt, you would go home and order a takeaway.

Yeh its not healthy to lose weight fast, it puts your body into shock and your right, your skin suffers as you end up with all flabby skin. Losing weight is about a lifestyle change so its not about doing a diet for 4 weeks, losing the weight then going back to your old habits and putting the weight back on again. The biggest loser shows don't advocate lifestyle change because that isn't a lifestyle of killing yourself at the gym like they do and losing massive amounts of weight in like 8-10 weeks. They will put on the same weight and more when they are finished.
