Not pointless, just not used well.
A race of technical savants and inventive genius' in a medieval setting can work well, look at the asura of guild wars, being the "zany" race is what ruins them.

Goblins i'm okay with but gnomes just......I hope the alliance kicks them to the street sometime.....or wow becomes a free-for-all. Only loyal to your race...
