If the government shuts down it'd be like Republicans offering nails for their own coffin to Democrats with a good hammer. The funny part would be that the nails and the hammer would still be provided by same corporate interests that fund both.

Sorry, the government shutdown is almost as scary as the horrible sequester that was going to destroy the country and we'd never survive and children and the elderly would all die. Then the sequester happened and no one really noticed it, so now liberals act like it doesn't exist. This just in, government quits spending, people still alive...more on the story at 6.

But yeah, it's a real thing. The government is only "allowed" to spend money up until a certain point (the debt ceiling), once they've reached that point, they can't continue to spend..essentially anything. So congress, as they've done about 70+ times, has to raise the debt ceiling.
Some might compare it to the sequester, but like the sequester, it might not effect everyone directly, but those who it does effect, will def notice it.
Chances are there will be a deal made this weekend to avoid a shut down.

Yup. I worked for that state of NJ for a number of years, at one point the state govt shut down, so I had a few days off of work. And then when they "re-opened" the state, I got paid for my days missed. So I, a "lazy state worker", got a few days off, then got paid for it as well. We didn't KNOW we were going to get paid..but it was pretty much a wash. Only hectic thing was trying to follow the news so that we knew if we could go to work or not.

I can't speak on state levels, but it didn't work so hot nationally in 2012.

I stumbled onto Fox News earlier and saw an article purporting Cruz as the 2016 Republican frontrunner.

Think NBC said its been shut down 19 times since 96. Which makes me think it will play out just like the sequester, lots of fear tactics and doom saying then it happens and nothing really changes.
