Dead Space hasn't been a survival horror game for a while. The first one was as close as it got, but each subsequent game ditched more of the survival and horror elements in favor of more gore and Gears of War.

However, in cases like that I would just say it's just negatively impacting gameplay. The only reason for the change to the weapon system was to integrate a cash shop to sell parts, and the revamped system really didn't add anything to the game.
