Plugged in a new modem recently to try and resolve the issue I have been having at home with a super slow and unstable broadband connection. It gave me the following readout of the settings:

From the looks of it your modem is only provisioned for a 2.5Mbps/512Kbps throughput. That might explain a bit

After dealing with dropout and slow connection issues with a new BT hub i turned off wifi channel hopping and mode N and have not had an issue since.

That (advertised) channel hopping is a load of BS as when i was having issues, i ran wireshark and found all other BT routers in area are using same channel. So much for it automatically moving to a clear channel if busy.

Also for some reason i get double the signal strength all over the house if the back of the router is facing away from wall. In normal front forward direction i couldnt get max signal even sitting close to the thing, since turning it round i get max signal all through the house.

Still a fair chunk more than I'm getting, I'll have a look today and see what I can do about changing that, but I suspect that its not a modem setting, more what the IP Profile set by BT is.

Interesting... certainly defies conventional logic. Although at this point I've gone and upgraded the modem for a Business Grade Modem Router one we sell at work and plugged in a Asus RT-AC68U and set it up with a failover to my 3G Router which has 2x 10dBi High Gain Antennas attached.

Looking through it again, my guess is you should be getting 2.2Mbps/440kbps based on the profile.

its BT. Their ADSL service is fucking abysmal, their customer service is not much better, I hope you are not stuck in a long term contract with them as I would advise you to move to another provider ASAP.

The best you are going to get from first line support is "its an upto (enter speed you where sold on here) service, Due to your location the best you can get is".
I would urge you not to accept this, ask them if it could be a stale connection. Make sure you have changed all your filters and are plugged into the master socket before you contact them as they will ask you to do this.

All the faceplates are filtered, we've just replaced all of the wireing in the house, I spoke to BT on Monday, got the case escalated, they said they sent someone to the exchange to check it out, but in the end they came back with the same babble as before, eventually you just end up say "ok, fine" so that you can try and stop your ear from aching.

Actually in this set-up I have now, there is a 3G Modem Router connected to twin 10dBi antennas as a failover. (Without the antennas, there's no signal, we have to use a signal booster which routes the call through the internet anyway)
